The UCLA Athletic Department held its fifth annual "Big Dance" at Pauley Pavilion June 1. Student-athletes from all 22 of UCLA's intercollegiate athletic teams were on hand for the Hawaiian-themed event, which featured a Supershot competition, talent contest and concert by Everyone's Fantasy, which is comprised of members of the UCLA football and men's track & field teams.
In the Supershot competition, which awards the three team members who can make a layup, free throw and three pointer the fastest, Nick DeFelice (cross country), Kisha Auld (gymnastics) and Damien Scott (Football/Men's Volleyball) took the title. Scott shot the layup, Auld hit the free throw, and DeFelice was the three-point shooter.
Auld was a double-winner at the Big Dance, as she and her gymnastics teammates won the Golden Cup for the first time for their attendance at selected UCLA sporting events.
The gymnasts fell one point short of a sweep, however, when Dianna Gooden of the women's track and field team took home top honors in the talent competition with her rendition of "Officially Missing You". The gymnastics team's dance performance earned second place. Also competing in the talent competition were pole vaulter Yoo Kim, who balanced a broom, folding chair and long-stemmed flower on his chin; and Nastassja Hall from the women's track and field team, who danced to Beyonce's "Baby Boy".
Kristen Maloney (Women's Gymnastics), Joe Axelrad (Men's Water Polo) and Chad Concolino (Baseball) were each awarded the C.H.A.M.P.S. Inspirational Award, given annually to a male and female student-athlete who has overcome personal adversity, injury or illness while achieving athletic success.
The Big Dance was sponsored by the Bruin Athletic Council in conjunction with the UCLA Athletic Department.
