Three Former UCLA Players Earn Berths in U.S. Open

Three former UCLA golfers earned berths in the 105th U.S. Open to be played at Pinehurst #2 in North Carolina, June 16-19.
Scott McCarron, John Merrick and Brandt Jobe all qualified at the Columbus, OH site June 6 where the top 20 players earned berths to this year's second major championship.
McCarron, a 14-year PGA TOUR player, tied for second with scores of 68-65--137 at the Brookside Golf and Country Club and the Lakes Golf and Country Club. Merrick, in his first season as a professional, tied for sixth with scores of 67-69--136. Jobe, a member of UCLA's 1988 NCAA championship team, tied for 15th with scores of 68-69--137.
Veteran PGA TOUR player Duffy Waldorf, a 1985 UCLA graduate, failed to qualify at the same site, despite carding scores of 68-72--140.
Other former UCLA players who did not qualify included three from the El Caballero site in Tarzana: Travis Johnson, Steve Pate and Eddy Lee.
In other news, sophomores UCLA sophomores Chris Heintz and Joakim Renstrom were named to the All-Pac-10 Academic Honorable Mention Team.
