Junior Ciara Viehweg had another big performance in the steeplechase as she broke three records en route to victory on day two of the Rafer Johnson/Jackie Joyner Kersee Invitational to highlight the women's team.
Viehweg, who just last week set a new school record and lifetime-best in the steeple (10:27.73), did it again on Friday night as she broke the school, Drake Stadium and RJ/JJK meet record. The redshirt junior clocked 10:20.66 as she won by nearly 23 seconds. That time shattered the previous RJ/JJK record of 10:36.65 set in 2008. Her run also demolished the stadium record of 10:35.36 set back in 2001. She now moves into the top-10 in the NCAA this season.
Also on Friday, freshman Ryann Krais picked up an NCAA provisional qualifier in the heptathlon as she placed third overall with a score of 5220 points. Krais opened up the day with a long jump mark of 17-5.25 (645 pts.) for the third-best jump of the competition. In the javelin, she had the second-longest mark at 103-4 (505 points) and then won the 800m in a time of 2:20.69 for 814 points. Her two-day score is one of the top-15 heptathlon marks in the NCAA this season.
Sophomore Ashlea McLaughlin won the open 400m with an NCAA regional qualifying time of 54.61. In the javelin, junior Tara Ross was the top collegiate finisher and second overall with a throw of 153-5. Freshman Brittany Borman finished eighth with a throw of 138-6.
In the invite 5000m, freshman Katja Goldring ran a regional qualifying time of 16:48.70 to finish second overall. Freshman Camilla Dencer won the open 800m with a season-best and NCAA regional qualifying mark of 2:09.72. Sophomore Shannon Murakami won the open1500m with a lifetime-best run of 4:30.20.
Competition concludes on Saturday with the invitational portion of the meet. Rafer Johnson and Jackie Joyner Kersee, the namesakes of the meet, will be honored in a ceremony at 2:00 pm.
