UCLA Baseball Announces Three Incoming Players for 2010
LOS ANGELES - The UCLA baseball program has announced that three southern California high school seniors - Allen Aguilar, Beau Amaral and Tyler Heineman - will enroll at UCLA for the fall 2009 quarter and join the baseball program for the 2010 season.
The trio of Aguilar, Amaral and Heineman will arrive on campus in September 2009 before the Bruins' begin their fall practice schedule. Aguilar, a 6-foot-2 right-handed pitcher, has led St. Augustine High School (San Diego) with a 5-2 record and 2.84 ERA through his senior season.
"Allen has tremendous upside on the mound," head coach John Savage said. "He is a very good athlete who excelled as a wide receiver on the football field. He can throw different pitches at different arm angles and can really be a versatile guy for us next spring."
Amaral spent his final three years at Huntington Beach High School on the varsity squad. A former Southern California Mariners scout league team selection in 2007 and 2008, the left-handed outfielder has batted .427 with 17 RBI and 32 runs as a senior in 2009. Amaral's father, Rich, played for the Bruins from 1982-83 before enjoying a successful 10-year major league career (1991-2000).
"Beau is a tremendous athlete who can really go get the ball in the outfield," Savage said. "He's very sure-handed defensively and is a high on-base percentage player who runs well. He really has a strong feel for the game and is a polished player who we feel can make an impact as a freshman."
Heineman earned All-CIF honors as a junior and senior and has compiled a .452 batting average as a senior in 2009 at Windward School. A 5-foot-10 catcher from Pacific Palisades, Calif., Heineman competed at the World Wood Bat Championships (Jupiter, Fla.) in October 2008.
"Tyler is a very good receiver who has proven in summer and high school baseball that he can catch velocity," Savage said. "He's a scrappy player who can come in and give us depth at the catching position."
