Three UCLA Baseball Players Earn All-Pac-10 Team Accolades

WALNUT CREEK, Calif. - Freshman right-hander Trevor Bauer has captured Pac-10 Freshman of the Year honors and joins senior first baseman Cody Decker and freshman right-hander Gerrit Cole on the 2009 All-Pac-10 baseball team, as announced Wednesday by the Pac-10 Conference.
Juniors Charles Brewer, Gavin Brooks, Blair Dunlap and Casey Haerther and sophomores Niko Gallego and Matt Grace have earned All-Pac-10 honorable mention accolades.
Bauer becomes the second Bruin in the last three seasons to have earned Pac-10 Freshman of the Year accolades (Gabe Cohen, 2007). Decker becomes UCLA's first two-time All-Pac-10 team honoree since 2003, when Wes Whisler secured his second consecutive All-Pac-10 team selection.
The pitching duo of Bauer and Cole is the first pair of UCLA freshmen named to the same All-Pac-10 team since freshmen Eric Byrnes and Peter Zamora earned All-Pac-10 team honors in 1995.
Bauer went 9-3 with a 2.99 ERA and two saves, compiling 92 strikeouts and 27 walks in a team-high 105.1 innings. Bauer enrolled at UCLA in January 2009 after having graduated one semester early from Hart High School. He began the season pitching in the bullpen before earning a slot in the starting rotation.
In Pac-10 action, Bauer went 7-0 with a 2.98 ERA and team-high four complete games, totaling 54 strikeouts and 14 walks. As a starting pitcher, he went 7-0 with a 3.16 ERA, recording 67 strikeouts and 19 walks while limiting the opposition to a .217 batting average. Bauer twice earned Pac-10 Pitcher of the Week honors.
Through Sunday's Pac-10 action, Bauer ranks second in innings pitched (105.1), tied for second in wins (9), seventh in strikeouts (92), eighth in ERA (2.99) and ninth in opponent average (.225) among Pac-10 pitchers. Additionally, Bauer tied the school record for most wins by a freshman pitcher (Pete Janicki, nine wins in 1990).
Cole finished his freshman season with a 4-8 record and 3.49 ERA, accumulating a team-best 104 strikeouts and 38 walks in 85.0 innings. The right-hander from Santa Ana, Calif., currently ranks second in the Pac-10 in opponent batting average (.191) and third in strikeouts (104). In his seven losses as a starting pitcher, UCLA's offense managed just 2.0 runs per game.
Through Sunday's games, Cole ranks fifth nationally in hits allowed per nine innings (6.04) and 17th in the country in total strikeouts and strikeouts per nine innings (11.01).
Decker currently leads all Pac-10 players with 21 home runs and finished the season as UCLA's team leader in RBI (53), runs (55), slugging percentage (.683), walks (36) and total bases (136). The senior from Santa Monica, Calif., ranked second on the ballclub in batting average (.322), hits (64) and on-base percentage (.434).
Decker, who was also named an All-Pac-10 Team selection in 2007, twice earned Pac-10 Player of the Week honors in 2009. He belted more home runs (21) and scored more runs (55) than any Bruin since 2000 (home runs - Dave Johnson 23, Chase Utley 22, Bill Scott 21; runs - Chase Utley 81). He becomes the first UCLA player to have led the Bruins in home runs in multiple seasons since Tim DeCinces (1995, 1996).
A standout defensive first baseman, Decker ranked seventh in the Pac-10 in fielding percentage (.997), having committed just one error in 313 chances. In four seasons at UCLA, Decker compiled a .995 fielding percentage, allowing three errors in 653 total chances.
Through Sunday's games, Decker ranks first in home runs (21), third in runs (55), fourth in slugging percentage (.683), tied for fourth in total bases (136) and walks (36) and fifth in RBI (53).
Brewer and Brooks have earned All-Pac-10 honorable mention accolades for the second consecutive season. Brewer went 3-5 with a 4.52 ERA in 16 games (14 starts), totaling 65 strikeouts and 22 walks in 71.2 innings. Brooks led the Bruins with 27 appearances (26 relief outings), logging a team-high eight saves and a 4.71 ERA in 36.1 frames.
Dunlap batted .301, starting all but one of UCLA's 56 contests in center field. He led the Bruins with 68 hits, 17 doubles and 15 stolen bases. Dunlap finished second on the team with 45 runs and a .496 slugging percentage and was third with seven home runs and 39 RBI.
Gallego hit at a .273 clip, including a .300 average in Pac-10 play. Starting in all but one game at shortstop, Gallego posted a .960 fielding percentage, committing just nine errors on the season (including just two errors in 27 Pac-10 games). He collected eight doubles and one triple, totaling 27 RBI and 26 runs.
Grace went 4-3 in 22 games (19 relief appearances), collecting 34 strikeouts and 11 walks in 40.0 innings. Haerther captured All-Pac-10 honorable mention acclaim, batting at a .305 clip with nine homers and 42 RBI. An All-Pac-10 team selection one year ago, Haerther finished third on the team with a .473 slugging percentage.
