Four UCLA Baseball Players Earn Pac-10 All-Academic Team Honors

WALNUT CREEK, Calif. - Junior Gabe Cohen of the UCLA baseball team has earned Pac-10 first-team All-Academic honors for the second consecutive season, and senior Gino Aielli and juniors Gavin Brooks and Justin Uribe have secured second-team honors, as announced Monday by the Pac-10 Conference.
Brooks and Uribe have earned second-team All-Academic accolades for the second straight year. In addition, junior Blair Dunlap and sophomores Chris Giovinazzo, Matt Grace and Rob Rasmussen have claimed All-Academic honorable mention acclaim.
UCLA and Arizona State lead the Pac-10 with four All-Academic team selections, while the Bruins and Stanford have secured a conference-best eight combined All-Academic honorees (includes honorable mentions).
Cohen, a junior communication studies major from Woodland Hills, Calif., has compiled a 3.63 cumulative grade-point average. He batted .274 with five home runs and 28 RBI and 24 runs in 42 games in 2009.
Aielli, a senior history major from Laguna Niguel, Calif., has posted a 3.25 grade-point average at UCLA. He led the Bruins with a .353 batting average in 43 games in 2009, logging 10 doubles, two home runs and 24 runs.
Brooks, a junior economics major from Vista, Calif., has recorded a 3.32 cumulative grade-point average. Serving as UCLA's closer in 2009, Brooks logged a team-leading eight saves and 36 strikeouts in 36.1 innings.
Uribe, a junior English major from Santa Ana, Calif., has tallied a 3.31 cumulative grade-point average. Uribe batted .318 in 47 games for the Bruins, totaling three home runs, 11 doubles, 23 RBI and 27 runs.
Dunlap, a redshirt junior outfielder (senior, academic standing), secured honorable mention Pac-10 All-Academic honors for the second consecutive season. Giovinazzo, Grace and Rasmussen each captured honorable mention All-Academic acclaim for the first time in their respective careers.
To be eligible for selection to the Pac-10 All-Academic team, a student-athlete must have a minimum 3.0 cumulative grade-point average and be either a starter or significant contributor.
