Track & Field Sending Small Contingent To UCSD Triton Invite

While the majority of both the men's and women's track and field teams will rest up as they prepare for the annual crosstown battle with USC, a handful of athletes will head to La Jolla for the UCSD Triton Invitational. The women's team will send pole vaulters and jumpers, as well as Ryann Krais in the 400m hurdles. The men's team will send throwers, vaulters and decathlete Trent Perez to compete in a few events.
Looking Ahead To May 1st
The Bruins will host crosstown rival USC on Saturday May 1st in the
annual dual meet with the Trojans. The hammer will be held on Saturday,
instead of Friday (as it has been held in years past) at 9:30 am. The rest of
the meet will begin at 12:10 on the fi eld and 1:00 pm on the track. There
is no television coverage of this year's meet.

Viuf Regains 2009 Form With 14-2 Vault
Katy Viuf has re-entered the national scene after battling injuries during
indoors. After clearing 14-0 at the RJ/JJK Invite, Viuf cleared a lifetime-best
14-2 at the Tom Jones Memorial Classic in Florida. That mark is No. 3 in
the NCAA and No. 3 all-time at UCLA.
Dylan Knight Moves Into Bruin Top-10
Competing in Tracktown USA (Eugene, OR), Knight blew away the steeplechase
fi eld in a dual with the Ducks as he ran an impressive lifetimebest
of 8:48.84 to win. That time is eighth in the NCAA and eight all-time
in UCLA history.
Rowe Hurdles Into UCLA Top-10
Lindsay Rowe made her all-time top-10 debut at the Tom Jones Memorial
Classic in Florida as she ran a lifetime-best 13.36 in the hurdles. With that
time, Rowe moved to 10th all-time in school history.
McLaughlin Hitting Her Stride
Junior sprinter Ashlea McLaughin's season is shaping up to be a big one
as she has already ran lifetime-bests in the 200m, 400m and 800m this
season. She has been building a strong base through 800m training and it
has carried over into the sprinting events as she holds the top marks for
the Bruins in all three events.
Primm & Patterson Start Outdoors Off Hot
Senior Marlon Patterson opened his outdoor season with a bang at the
Cal/NV meet, running the top 1500m time by an American this season
with his lifetime-best run of 3:42.13. Primm also had a huge opener in the
800m, running just .03 seconds shy of his lifetime-best (1:47.78) for the
No. 2 time in the NCAA this season.
Peña Vaults To New Heights In Senior Season
After clearing a lifetime-best 13-11.25 during indoors, Peòa has continued
to move up the bar as she cleared a lifetime-best 14-1.25 at the Cal/NV
meet. That mark is tied for second in the NCAA this season and tied for
No. 4 all-time in UCLA history.
Coaching Honors Roll In For Maynard
Head men's coach Mike Maynard was named Men's Coach of the Meet at
the Cal/NV Championships, his second coach of the year honor in just his
fi rst season at UCLA. Maynard was also honored as MPSF Coach of the
Year after leading the men to the indoor conference crown.
Bruin Redshirts For The 2010 Outdoor Season
On the women's side, pole vaulter Tori Anthony will redshirt the outdoor
season. She has had some injury problems and will return in 2011 for her
senior season. Freshman Kayla Kovar will also redshirt the 2010 season.
On the men's side, throwers Darius Savage (medical), Matt Kosecki, Andreas
Drbal, as well as jumper Taylor Hobson will sit out this season.
Freshman DJ Lloyd Out For 2010 Season
Freshman jumper DJ Lloyd suffered a knee injury at the Cal Poly Invite
on April 3rd and will miss the remainder of the outdoor season. He will
require surgery and could receive a medical redshirt.
