No. 20 UCLA Baseball Cruises Past San Diego State, 14-6

LOS ANGELES - The No. 20 UCLA baseball team opened a 7-0 lead after three innings and held on for a 14-6 victory over San Diego State at Steele Field at Jackie Robinson Stadium on Tuesday night.
The Bruins (20-12) pounded out 18 hits to score a season-high 14 runs against the visiting Aztecs (11-26), as head coach John Savage earn career win No. 300.
Kevin Williams led the way with a 4-for-5 effort, two runs and one RBI, becoming the first UCLA hitter this season to record at least four hits in a game. Cody Regis extended his season-long hitting streak to 13 games, going 1-for-2 with a three-run homer, two runs scored and two walks. In all, 10 players for UCLA had at least one hit and nine Bruins each scored at least one run in the non-conference victory.
Right-hander Zack Weiss (3-1) picked up the victory for the second straight midweek start, limiting San Diego State to two runs and two hits in five innings. Weiss struck out five batters and issued three walks. San Diego State right-hander Mike Hachadorian (0-3) absorbed the loss, allowing one run and two hits in the first inning.
Tyler Heineman logged a career-high three hits, going 3-for-5 with two runs and one RBI. Chris Giovinazzo (2-for-5, one run, one RBI), Cody Keefer (2-for-4, two runs) and Pat Valaika (2-for-4, two runs, two RBI) were the three other Bruins to each record more than one hit.
UCLA scored one run in each of the first two innings before using a five-run third inning to lead 7-0.
The Bruins opened the bottom of the third with a leadoff walk by Regis followed by consecutive bunt singles by Giovinazzo and Keefer to load the bases. Williams singled to left field, scoring Regis, before Valaika lined a two-run double to left field, sending home Giovinazzo and Keefer. Run-scoring groundouts by Heineman and Jeff Gelalich helped UCLA push its cushion to 7-0.
San Diego State got on the board with two runs in the top of the fifth, before the Bruins answered with a five-run fifth inning. Amaral opened the scoring with a two-run single in the bottom of the frame, before Regis unloaded with a three-run homer to right field, his second round-tripper of the season.
UCLA pushed its lead to 14-2 with two runs in the bottom of the sixth, before San Diego State took advantage of five walks and two singles in the top of the eighth to score four runs.
The Bruins return to action with a three-game Pac-10 series at Stanford beginning Thursday, April 21. Game Notes: John Savage earned career win No. 300 - the Bruins' head coach collected 88 wins as the UC Irvine head coach from 2002-04 and has recorded 212 wins midway through his seventh year at UCLA ... Cody Regis pushed his hitting streak to a team-leading 13 games, and Beau Amaral went 1-for-3 to extend his hitting streak to nine games ... Jeff Gelalich had an eight-game hitting streak snapped ...
