Trevor Bauer Leads No. 20 UCLA Baseball Past Stanford, 4-1

STANFORD, Calif. - Trevor Bauer struck out 17 batters in his third consecutive complete game to send the No. 20 UCLA baseball team past Stanford, 4-1, before 1,953 at Sunken Diamond in a Pac-10 game on Friday night.
Bauer (8-1) allowed one run and four hits, walking two batters through nine innings. The right-hander from Valencia, Calif., tied his career-high with 17 strikeouts and secured his seventh consecutive win. Bauer improved to 5-0 in Pac-10 games with his fourth complete game of the season.
UCLA (21-13, 10-4 Pac-10) remained in a tie for second place in the Pac-10 standings with Arizona State, evening its Pac-10 series at one game apiece. Saturday's rubber match will begin at 1 p.m. at Stanford's Sunken Diamond.
Cody Keefer led the Bruins at the plate against Stanford (18-13, 4-7 Pac-10), going 3-for-4 with two doubles, two runs and one RBI. Cody Regis and Dean Espy each went 2-for-5. Regis extended his hitting streak to a career-best 15 games, and Beau Amaral went 1-for-4 to push his hitting streak to 10 games.
The Bruins pounded out 12 hits, as Stanford right-hander Jordan Pries (4-4) was tagged with the loss. Pries surrendered four runs and 10 hits through six innings, totaling seven strikeouts and one walk.
Bauer struck out 10 batters through the first four innings, allowing one run to Stanford in the third. With the bases loaded and two outs, Stephen Piscotty waved a check swing called for strike three on a pitch that bounced away from Bruins' catcher Steve Rodriguez. Lonnie Kauppila scored from third on the wild pitch, before Bauer struck out Kenny Diekroeger on three pitches to escape the jam.
UCLA answered with two runs in the fourth and one in each of the fifth and sixth innings. In the top of the fourth, Chris Giovinazzo singled to center field before scoring on a deep fly ball double to center field by Keefer. A two-out wild pitch with Keefer aboard third base allowed the Bruins' left fielder to score the game-winning run that inning.
In the fifth inning, the Bruins pushed their margin to 3-1 on Espy's run-scoring infield single, sending home Pat Valaika from third base. In the top of the sixth, Rodriguez drove a one-out single up the middle, sending home Keefer, who opened the frame with his second double of the game.
Stanford's only other threat came in the bottom of the eighth. The Cardinal put runners aboard first and third before Diekroeger grounded into a fielder's choice, ending the inning. Bauer logged two strikeouts in a 1-2-3 ninth inning to record his Pac-10-leading eighth victory.
