Zack Weiss Leads No. 24 UCLA Baseball Past UC Irvine, 6-1

LOS ANGELES - Right-hander Zack Weiss allowed one unearned run and three hits through a season-high seven innings to lead the No. 24 UCLA baseball team past UC Irvine, 6-1, in a non-conference game at Steele Field at Jackie Robinson Stadium on Tuesday night.
Weiss (4-1) required 86 pitches through seven innings, recording four strikeouts and one walk. The freshman from Irvine, Calif., retired 11 consecutive batters from the third through sixth innings.
UCLA (22-14) overcame an early 1-0 deficit in the first inning, scoring six runs through the first three frames to secure a 6-1 lead over UC Irvine (26-11). Mitchell Beacom struck out two batters in a scoreless eighth inning, and Nick Vander Tuig tossed a scoreless ninth to preserve the victory.
Cody Regis went 2-for-2 with one double, three RBI and two walks, and Dean Espy went 2-for-4 with two runs and two RBI to pace UCLA's offense. Beau Amaral went 1-for-3, extending his season-long hitting streak to 13 games. Jeff Gelalich went 1-for-3 with two runs, one walk and one hit-by-pitch.
UC Irvine left-hander Andy Lines (3-2) absorbed the loss, allowing two runs off two hits and two walks in the first inning. Andrew Thurman surrendered four runs and five hits through two innings, before three Anteater relievers combined to limit UCLA to two hits in five scoreless frames.
UCLA led 6-1 after three innings, scoring two runs in the first inning, three in the second and one in the third. Espy had an RBI-single in the bottom of the first, before Regis belted a run-scoring double. In the second inning, Espy lined an RBI-single to center field and Regis blooped a two-run base-hit to left-center field, scoring Gelalich and Espy.
The Bruins added their sixth run of the game on Trevor Brown's RBI-single to center in the third inning. Brown's base-hit sent home Cody Keefer from second base, after Keefer had led off the frame with a bunt single up the third base line.
UC Irvine scored one run in the top of the first to lead, 1-0. After moving to third base on a single by Sean Madigan, D.J. Crumlich scored as Brian Hernandez grounded into a double play.

Game Notes: After going 2-for-2 with two walks on Tuesday evening, Cody Regis has hit safely in 20 of the Bruins' last 22 games, drawing at least one walk in each of the two games in which he has gone hitless ... Beau Amaral extended his hitting streak to 13 games, two shy of his career-high 15-game hitting streak from May 2010 ... UCLA has won three of its last four games against UC Irvine ... the Bruins improved to 3-2 in Zack Weiss' five midweek starts ... Weiss had extremely efficient pitch counts through the middle innings (seven in the third, nine in the fourth, nine in the fifth, 14 in the sixth and eight in the seventh).
