No. 24 UCLA Baseball Falls to Cal State Bakersfield, 5-1

LOS ANGELES - The No. 24 UCLA baseball team dropped a 5-1 decision to Cal State Bakersfield in the opening game of a three-game non-conference series Friday night at Steele Field at Jackie Robinson Stadium.
Cal State Bakersfield right-hander Mike McCarthy (6-5) earned the victory by holding the Bruins (27-19) to one unearned run and two hits in a complete game. McCarthy struck out seven batters and issued one walk.
UCLA right-hander Gerrit Cole (5-6) absorbed the loss in a complete-game effort, surrendering five runs and 10 hits through nine innings. Cole registered seven strikeouts and two walks.
The visiting Roadrunners (27-19) scored two runs in each of the first and second innings to secure a 4-0 advantage. Cal State Bakersfield added one more run in the top of the seventh before UCLA got on the board with one run in the eighth.
Jeremy Rodriguez led the Roadrunners at the plate with a 3-for-3 effort, two RBI and one run. Tyler Shryock went 2-for-3 with one home run, one double, two runs and one RBI.
UCLA's Marc Navarro and Beau Amaral had the only hits for the Bruins.
Cal State Bakersfield claimed a 2-0 lead in the first inning, taking advantage of four singles. With runners at first and second, Martin Medina drew a walk to load the bases. Oscar Sanay followed with a run-scoring fielder's choice, forcing Medina out at second base. DC Legg lined a base-hit into left field, sending home Rodriguez.
The Roadrunners added two runs in the second inning to lead, 4-0. Shryock opened the frame with a solo home run to right field. Ryan McIntyre followed with an infield single and moved to second base on a sacrifice bunt. Rodriguez lined a single to left field, sending home McIntyre from second base.
Cal State Bakersfield scored once in the seventh, extending its cushion to 5-0. Shyrock opened the inning with a double to center and moved to third on a single by Ryan McIntyre. A sacrifice fly to center by Rodriguez plated Shryock.
In the bottom of the eighth, Chris Giovinazzo reached on a fielding error by Shryock at shortstop and advanced to second base on a balk. Navarro lined a pinch-hit double down the left field line to score Giovinazzo.
UCLA returns to action against Cal State Bakersfield on Saturday. Game time at Jackie Robinson Stadium is 2 p.m. Admission to UCLA's home baseball games costs $7 for adults and $5 for children.
Game Notes: Gerrit Cole hurled his fifth career complete game, his fourth of the season ... Cole moved into eighth place on the Bruins' all-time innings pitched list (300.0) and into 11th place on the Pac-10 Conference's all-time strikeouts list (350)... Cole scattered three hits through the final seven innings ... UCLA's series-opener against Cal State Bakersfield marked the team's first non-conference game on a Friday since March 11 versus Georgia in the Dodgertown Classic.
