No. 24 UCLA Baseball Defeats Cal State Bakersfield, 10-1

LOS ANGELES - Right-hander Trevor Bauer pitched his sixth consecutive complete game, his seventh of the season, striking out 13 batters to lead the No. 24 UCLA baseball team past Cal State Bakersfield, 10-1, in a non-conference game at Steele Field at Jackie Robinson Stadium on Saturday.
Bauer (10-2) earned the victory and re-established UCLA's single-season strikeouts record, pushing his total this spring to 167, two ahead of his previous school-record total of 165 from 2010. The resident of Valencia, Calif., allowed one run and eight hits in nine innings, walking two batters in his 12th career complete game.
UCLA (28-19) erupted with eight runs in the third inning before adding two more in the fourth to snap a three-game losing streak. Cal State Bakersfield (27-20) got on the board with one run in the top of the fifth.
Six Bruins recorded at least two hits against the visiting Roadrunners, with Cody Keefer (3-for-3, two runs, one home run) and Steve Rodriguez (3-for-5, one run, one RBI) leading the way. Keefer and Cody Regis each belted home runs, as Regis went 2-for-5 with one run and three RBI. Chris Giovinazzo went 2-for-3 with two runs and one walk, Dean Espy went 2-for-5 with one run and one RBI, and Beau Amaral went 2-for-4 with two doubles, one run and one RBI.
UCLA's first seven hitters in the eight-run third inning scored. After Espy helped the Bruins get on the board with a run-scoring single, Regis drilled a three-run home run to right field. Keefer and Giovinazzo drew back-to-back walks and Rodriguez reached on a bunt single. Marc Navarro lined a two-run pinch-hit single up the middle, scoring Keefer and Giovinazzo. Jeff Gelalich's sacrifice fly scored Rodriguez, and Amaral continued the inning with a run-scoring double, plating Navarro from third base.
UCLA added two runs in the fourth inning, pushing its cushion to 10-0. Keefer belted a one-out solo home run to straight-away center field. Giovinazzo followed with a triple to the gap in right-center field before scoring on Rodriguez's single to right.
Cal State Bakersfield scored one run on a strike-three wild pitch, allowing DC Legg to score from third base as Ryan McIntyre struck out and advanced to first.
Right-hander Martin Medina (2-3) absorbed the loss, allowing six runs (five earned) and six hits in two innings. Making his first start of the season (14th overall appearance), Medina struck out four batters and walked two.
UCLA returns to action against Cal State Bakersfield on Saturday. Game time at Jackie Robinson Stadium is 1 p.m. Admission to UCLA's home baseball games costs $7 for adults and $5 for children.
Game Notes: UCLA's eight runs in the bottom of the third were the most runs in one inning for the Bruins all season and marked the highest single-inning total since March 20, 2010, when UCLA plated nine runs in the bottom of the sixth in a 12-2 victory over Oral Roberts ... Trevor Bauer moved into first place on UCLA's career innings pitched list (346.1) and into third place on the Pac-10 Conference's career strikeouts list (424), surpassing Seth Etherton's 420 strikeouts (USC, 1995-98) ... the Bruins belted two home runs in one game for the first time this season ... Bauer has recorded 10 or more strikeouts in 12 of his 13 starts this spring ... with his 10th win of the year, Bauer became the first pitcher in school history to have earned at least 10 victories or more in each of two seasons (went 12-3 last spring and has gone 10-2 this season; went 9-3 as a freshman in 2009).
