After winning his first Pac-10 800m crown last weekend, senior Cory Primm didn't rest on his laurels and went out to compete on Saturday evening. Competing unattached at the USATF High Performance Meet at Occidental, the All-American ran the No. 5 800m time in the world this year.
Primm, who came into the meet ranked fourth in the NCAA and fifth in the USATF with a best of 1:46.20, blazed across the Oxy track to a new lifetime-best of 1:44.71 to win. That time broke his previous lifetime-best and school record of 1:45.70, which he ran during the semifinal round at the NCAA Outdoor meet in 2010. His time also set a senior record in the two-lap event. He now is the No. 1 800m runner in the U.S. and No. 5 in the world (time does not count for NCAA purposes because he was unattached). The time is also an Olympic "A" standard qualifying mark and is No. 3 all-time in Pac-10 history.
According to Track & Field News, Primm's time is also the fastest collegiate time since 1996 and is No. 3 all-time on the collegiate list.
Primm and the Bruins will head to Oregon next weekend for the first round of the NCAA Championships.
