Bauer Fires Complete Game, Leads UCLA Past Oregon, 3-1

EUGENE, Ore. - Right-hander Trevor Bauer hurled his fifth consecutive complete game and sixth of the season, recording 12 strikeouts and three walks, to lead the UCLA baseball team past Oregon, 3-1, before 1,828 at PK Park on Saturday evening.
Bauer (9-2) earned his team-leading ninth victory and pushed his nation-leading strikeout total to 154, second-highest on UCLA's single-season strikeout list behind his 163 strikeouts in 2010. He became the first UCLA pitcher to log at least 400 career strikeouts, increasing his career total to 411. Bauer allowed one run and scattered four hits.
UCLA (26-16, 13-7) collected its fourth consecutive victory, having surrendered six runs in its last five games, and registered a series victory over Oregon (23-22, 5-12).
Kevin Williams provided the key hit for the Bruins, going 1-for-2 with one walk and a two-run single in the top of the fifth inning to snap a 1-1 tie. Five other UCLA hitters each had one hit, and Dean Espy registered the Bruins' other RBI.
Oregon received a strong performance from starting pitcher Madison Boer (3-4), who absorbed the loss after surrendering three runs and six hits in 8.1 innings. Boer struck out five batters and issued three walks.
Ryon Healy provided the Ducks' lone offensive highlight, going 2-for-3 with one a solo homer to tie the game, 1-1, in the bottom of the fourth inning.
The Bruins got on the board with one run in the top of the first, improving to 11-4 on the season when scoring in the opening frame. After Jeff Gelalich led off with a double down the left field line and moved to third on a sacrifice bunt, the Bruins' designated hitter scored on Espy's groundout.
UCLA answered Healy's fourth-inning round-tripper with two runs in the top of the fifth to claim a 3-1 lead. Steve Rodriguez led off the frame with a walk and moved to third base on Pat Valaika's double down the left field line. Williams grounded a single up the middle, scoring both Rodriguez and Valaika with nobody out.
