LUBBOCK, Texas - UCLA junior right-handed pitcher Trevor Bauer has been selected as one of 25 semifinalists to the 2011 National Pitcher of the Year Watch List, as announced Friday by the College Baseball Hall of Fame.
College baseball's version of the Cy Young Award, the Pitcher of the Year Award will be presented in Lubbock, Texas on July 3 as part of the College Baseball Hall of Fame's Night of Champions.
Bauer entered the weekend as the nation's leader in strikeouts (142), and led all Pac-10 pitchers in ERA (1.47), wins (tied, 8), innings pitched (91.2) and opponent batting average (.143). The resident of Valencia, Calif., has earned Pac-10 Pitcher of the Week honors four times this season. He has secured Louisville Slugger National Player of the Week accolades five times this spring and has twice been named Pro-Line Athletic National Player of the Week.
"The process of shrinking the list of top pitchers to 25 is never easy," said Justin Knowles, Pitcher of the Year committee co-chair.
Earlier last week, Bauer and teammate Gerrit Cole were named among the 60 semifinalists for the 2011 Golden Spikes Award, presented annually to the nation's premier amateur baseball player by USA Baseball.
This season, Bauer has become UCLA's all-time leader in strikeouts (399) and wins (29). Bauer's 399 career strikeouts ranks fourth all-time on the Pac-10 Conference's list. He has collected a 29-8 career record, including a staggering 27-5 record as a starting pitcher (went 2-3 in relief as a freshman in 2009).
UCLA is back in action Saturday night at Oregon for the second game of a three-game Pac-10 series versus the Ducks. Bauer is scheduled to make his 12th start of the season, with first pitch slated for 5 p.m. Fans can listen to each of Saturday's and Sunday's ballgames online, free of charge, at uclabruins.com.
