Former UCLA men's basketball standouts Kevin Love and Russell Westbrook helped lead Team USA to the gold medal match after a win over Argentina in the semifinals. The U.S. team will play for a gold medal on Sunday against Spain.
Men's Basketball
Kevin Love scored nine points and grabbed a game-high nine rebounds as the USA men's basketball team posted a 109-83 victory over Argentina on Friday, helping Team USA advance to the gold medal game. Russell Westbrook had seven points in nine minutes off the bench for the U.S. team, which has assured itself of a medal at the London Olympics. The United States led at halftime, 47-40, before outscoring Argentina by a 27-17 margin in the third quarter to secure a 74-57 cushion.
Team USA will face Spain in the gold medal game this Sunday. Game time is 7am PT. Sunday's gold medal contest will be televised live on NBC.
Men's Water Polo
Spain jumped out to a 5-2 lead at halftime and held off a late rally to defeat Team USA, 8-7, in the 5-8 semifinals of the Olympic tournament on Friday at London's Water Polo Arena. Former UCLA player and current head coach of the Bruins' men's water polo team, Adam Wright, scored one goal on two shots and also had an assist in 23 minutes of action. Former UCLA goalkeeper Chay Lapin did not play. Team USA (3-4) will now face Australia (2-5) in the 7th-place match on Sunday, Aug. 12 at 2:20 a.m. PT. Australia lost to Hungary 10-9 in its 5-8 semifinal match today and suffered an 11-8 defeat to Serbia in the semifinals on Wednesday, Aug. 8.
Coming Up Saturday
Women's Volleyball - Team USA, for which UCLA alum Karch Kiraly is an assistant coach, plays Brazil in the gold medal match. It will be televised on NBC's Primetime coverage beginning at 8:00pm PT, but fans can also watch live online at 10:30am PT on NBCOlympics.com.
