Adding championship experience to the women's coaching staff will be fifth-year
goalkeeper coach David Vanole.
Vanole, who also serves as goalkeeper coach for the UCLA Men's Soccer team,
showed his importance last season, as he helped goalkeeper Lindsay Culp post
another outstanding year. Culp recorded a career-high GAA of 0.82, the third
best in school history, and also broke her own single-season shutout record by
posting 10 last season. Vanole, who holds a USSF 'A' coaching license, has also
helped Culp claim first place in the UCLA record books for single season (17)
and career (45) wins and single season (11) and career (26.5) shutouts. He
helped guide the UCLA defense to a school record 11 shutouts in 1998. In his
five years as UCLA's goalkeeper coach, the goalies have combined for a 0.922
GAA and 38 shutouts.
Vanole has been a part of UCLA soccer for nine years. A four-year letterwinner
on the men's team from 1981-85, Vanole was a 1985 All-Far West selection.
Guarding the net in the 1985 NCAA Championship game, he held American University
scoreless through eight overtimes to give UCLA its first NCAA soccer title. In
that game, he fended off 10 first-half shots on goal and made six game-saving
saves. In the playoffs that season, Vanole shut out three opponents and gave up
just two goals in five games. His GAA in 1985 was a solid 0.77 with 89 saves and
nine shutouts.
Vanole still holds several spots in UCLA's record books. His 22 career shutouts
rank fifth in Bruin history, and he ranks fifth in career victories with 38.
Vanole is also tied for first with 18 single season victories, achieved in 1985,
and ranks second in single-season saves (90 in 1984) and third in career saves
(204).
