The UCLA Sports Medicine Department is located in the Acosta Athletic Training Center, which is a state-of-the-art coed facility that boasts 8,000 square feet of modalities, rehabilitation equipment, walk-in whirlpools, SwimEx aquatic pool, an Alter-G anti-gravity treadmill, cardio equipment, Pilates equipment and private offices. Daily operation includes a comprehensive program entailing injury prevention, evaluation, rehabilitation, reconditioning following surgery or injury, as well as education and counseling for the student-athletes.
Mark Pocinich, Director of Sports Medicine, leads the department comprised of 15 full-time Certified Athletic Trainers, two Physical Therapists and approximately 50 undergraduate student interns.
Head Team Physician, Dr. David McAllister, coordinates and directs physician care for the UCLA student-athletes. Team physicians are members of the Department of Orthopedic Surgery or the Department of Family Medicine at the UCLA Medical Center. The UCLA Medical Center, named 2011's #1 hospital in the Los Angeles Metropolitan Area and "Best Hospital in the West" by US News and World Report, is the primary referral source for the student athletes and is in close proximity to the campus.
UCLA's support staff consists of an array of exceptionally qualified and highly experienced medical professionals, which includes sports dietitians, sports psychologists, a dentist, podiatrist and insurance coordinator. Each intercollegiate team is assigned an orthopedic team physician, a sports medicine team physician, Certified Athletic Trainer, and student intern who are responsible for the health and well-being of the team.
