UCLA's Charles Brewer Makes MLB Debut with Arizona

June 10, 2013
LOS ANGELES - Former UCLA right-handed pitcher Charles Brewer made his major league debut on Monday evening, throwing 1.2 scoreless innings of relief for the Arizona Diamondbacks.
Brewer's first-ever major league outing came in a 5-4 win against the Los Angeles Dodgers at Dodger Stadium. Brewer scattered three hits and logged one strikeout for Arizona.
Brewer became the 71st former UCLA ballplayer to compete in the major leagues and the eighth player under head coach John Savage to ascend to the majors.
Selected in the 12th round of the 2009 MLB Draft by Arizona after having grown up in nearby Paradise Valley, Ariz., Brewer pitched for UCLA from 2007 through 2009. A two-year starting pitcher in Westwood, he helped lead the Bruins to postseason play in 2007 and 2008.
Brewer went 12-10 with a 4.88 ERA in three seasons at UCLA, totaling 138 strikeouts and 57 walks in 175.1 innings. He pitched in 39 games, making 27 starts, and was a fixture in the team's weekend rotation as a sophomore (2008) and junior (2009).
Entering in the seventh inning in relief of Arizona starter Wade Miley, Brewer recorded a 1-2-3 seventh inning. Los Angeles loaded the bases against Brewer and Arizona in the bottom of the eighth, before the right-hander induced a double-play groundout (third to home to first) and exited the game. Tony Sipp retired the threat for Arizona with an inning-ending flyout.
Brewer's major league debut arrived one day before former UCLA right-hander Gerrit Cole was scheduled to make his major league debut as the starting pitcher for the Pittsburgh Pirates. Cole will become the 72nd former UCLA player to play in the majors, the ninth Bruin to have done so under Savage.
Since July 2012, four former UCLA ballplayers have made their major league debuts - Trevor Bauer, Tyson Brummett, Jermaine Curtis and Brewer - with Cole to join that group on Tuesday evening.
Including Cole on Tuesday, UCLA will have seven former ballplayers competing in the major leagues - Hector Ambriz (Houston), Charles Brewer (Arizona), Brandon Crawford (San Francisco), Casey Janssen (Toronto), Josh Roenicke (Minnesota) and Chase Utley (Philadelphia).
