Los Angeles, Calif. - Sophomore right-hander David Berg continued to pick up All-America honors today, being named as a first-team All-American by both Baseball America and the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association.
Berg was named the 2013 Pac-12 Pitcher of the Year and has posted a record of 7-0 with 21 saves in a nation-leading 46 relief appearances. Berg is tied for first in the nation with a 0.88 ERA and his 21 saves are a new UCLA single-season record. Additionally, Berg's 21 saves are tied for second in all of Division I baseball and are just two shy of matching the NCAA single-season record.
The Covina, Calif. native is second in the country in WHIP (walks and hits allowed per innings pitched) with a mark of 0.80 and has 22 career saves, the most all-time in UCLA history. Berg has also allowed the lowest opposing batting average (.194) and fewest runs (7), walks (8) and second-fewest hits (49) in the Pac-12. At one point this season, he did not allow a run in 37 consecutive innings, which was the longest consecutive scoreless innings streak in the nation this season, and has recorded a save in seven of UCLA's last 10 games. Finally, Berg is a finalist for the NCBWA Stopper of the Year Award.
Baseball America and the NCBWA are the second and third publications to name Berg a first-team All-American this season, joining Louisville Slugger/Collegiate Baseball. Last season, Berg was named a second-team All-America selection by Perfect Game USA and earned first-team Freshman All-America honors from Baseball America. He also earned second-team Freshman All-America acclaim from the NCBWA and will compete for the USA Collegiate National Team this summer.
UCLA (44-17) will open College World Series play this Sunday against LSU (57-9) at 5 p.m. PT at TD Ameritrade Park Omaha. The game will be televised live by ESPN2.
