UCLA Track and Field Wraps Up Busy Spring Break

TEMPE, Ariz. – The UCLA track & field team concluded its spring break with an impressive showing at the Pac-12 vs. Big Ten Invitational this weekend at Sun Angel Stadium on the campus of Arizona State University.
Earning big wins on Saturday for the Bruins was the reigning Pac-12 champion Nicholas Scarvelis in the shot put. Scarvelis tied his personal best with a winning throw of 64-4.50. Braheme Days followed in second with a collegiate personal best of 62-1.25.
Freshman Leon Powell continued his stranglehold on the 100m in the early outdoor season as he blistered the straightaway in a winning time of 10.43.
Senior Derek Eager won his second meet this week in the javelin as he posted a throw of 211-8. In the 5,000m the men’s squad put together a dominating performance as the Bruins took the top three spots.
Lane Werley won the event in a time of 14:04.51. Daniel Herrera followed in second at 14:09.06 while Daniel De La Torre was third at 14:23.49.
In the women’s competition senior Bronte Golick won the 5,000m in a time of 16:34.64. All-American Kelsey Smith followed in third at 16:40.78.
Senior Zibby Boyer won her second meet this week by cruising to victory with a height of 5-8.75. Also posting impressive marks was senior Ally Courtnall in the 800m with a second place finish time of 2:09.57.
In the javelin sophomore Zaybree Haury was second with a throw of 156-10. Freshman Jessie Maduka took second in the long jump with a leap of 19-6.75. Senior Brea Buchanan raced to a second place finish in the 100m hurdles with a time of 13.57 while Sammy Marumoto was second in the pole vault with personal best of 13-0.25.
UCLA will return home to Drake Stadium to host the Legends Invitational. The two-day event will begin on Friday April 3.
