UCLA Wraps Up Multis with Key Points for the Championships

LOS ANGELES – The Pac-12 Championships for the combined events came to a close on Sunday at Drake Stadium. The Bruins secured 10 championship points on the women’s side and seven for the men.
Senior Tatum Souza was the runner-up in the heptathlon with 5,636 points while senior Alexis Walker scored key points with a seventh place finish on the strength of 5,201 points. Sophomore Monique Van followed in 10th with 4,683 points.
Souza saved her highest scoring for the last event, running a 2:18.76 in the 800m to tally 840 points. She opened the day with 729 points on an 18-4.50 long jump and added 660 points with a throw of 129-11 in the javelin.
Walker finished strong with her highest total coming in the 800m where she ran a 2:15.30 to tally 889 points. Van’s biggest total on the day also came in the 800m were she clocked a 2:28.05 for 718 points.
In the men’s competition senior Marcus Nilsson placed third with 7,663 points while freshman Zack Bornstein put together his first collegiate decathlon to score 6,991 points to place eighth overall.
Nilsson had a great second day to move up in the standings. He started his run on the grueling second day with a third place finish in the discus on a throw of 137-09 to score 705 points. He then literally vaulted himself into contention with 859 points on a clearance of 15-10 in the pole vault.
Bornstein also jumped into scoring position on the strength of a second place finish in the discus. The freshman launched a mark of 138-1 for 707 points. He capped off the competition with 732 points in the 1,500m.
Next weekend the Pac-12 Championships will continue at Drake Stadium, beginning on Saturday, May 16th and will conclude on Sunday, May 17.
The championship will be tape delayed on the Pac-12 Networks and will air on Sunday, May 24 at 9 a.m. PT. Paul Sunderland, Tom Feuer and Allyson Felix will be calling all the action, with Jill Savage reporting from the track.
