UCLA Wraps Up Day One of NCAA West Prelims

AUSTIN, Texas – The UCLA track & field team wrapped up day one of the NCAA West Prelims, Thursday at Mike A. Myers Track Stadium. The Bruins advanced four athletes to quarterfinal rounds.
On a day that started with several lightning delays and wet weather, the skies eventually cleared and UCLA was able to start its quest for Eugene, Ore.
The Bruins saved the best for last on day one of competition. Senior Bronte Golick claimed the 12th and final spot in the 10k to move on to the national meet. Golick crossed the line in a time of 34:50.54. The trip to the NCAA Championships will be a first for Golick.
Freshman Leon Powell took advantage of his homecoming to advance to the 100m quarterfinals on Friday. The Texas native clocked a personal best 10.32 (+2.1w) to finish 20th overall in the first round.
Senior Daniel Herrera advanced to the quarterfinals on Saturday by finishing fifth in his heat with a time of 3:52.09.
Also extending their season was senior Ally Courtnall and Nick Hartle in the 800m. Courtnall automatically advanced to Friday’s quarterfinal by placing third in her heat with a time of 2:07.89. Hartle won his heat to automatically advance with a time of 1:49.83.
Senior All-American Ida Storm saw her storied collegiate career come to end as she just missed qualifying for nationals by placing 13th with a throw of 201-6, just one inch off the 12th spot.
In the men’s long jump freshman Idrees Bernard and sophomore Austin Hazel did not advance with leaps of 22-5 and 22-8.50, respectively.
On the women’s side freshman Jessie Maduka finished 16th with a mark of 20-0.25 while sophomore May Brown placed 37th with a jump of 19-2.50.
Sophomore Cody Crampton could not get over the bar at 7-1.50 to place 23rd with a leap of 6-11.75.
In the men’s 1,500m junior Austin O’Neil and sophomore Sean Davis were unable to advance. O’Neil placed sixth is his heat with a 3:50.18 while Davis finished ninth in his heat at 3:51.71.
Freshman Joe Herrera capped off his solid freshman campaign by placing sixth in his heat with a time of 47.66.
The Bruins wrapped up day one in the 10k. Senior Kelsey Smith placed 25th with a time of 35:54.06. In his second career 10k junior Lane Werley finished 26th with a time of 31:16.59.
Action will begin on Friday for the Bruins at 11 a.m. PT. UCLA will have 11 athletes competing on the second day.
