OKLAHOMA CITY, Okla. - Junior Allexis Bennett was named a Top 10 finalist for the USA Softball Collegiate Player of the Year award on Wednesday, as announced by ASA/USA Softball.
In its 14th year, the USA Softball Collegiate Player of the Year award, given by the National Governing Body for softball in the United States, is designed to recognize outstanding athletic achievement by female collegiate softball players across the country. Previous recipients of the award include former Bruin Stacey Nuveman, the winner of the inaugural accolade in 2002.
This year’s finalists are comprised of three seniors, six juniors and one sophomore. The student-athletes selected represent eight universities and five conferences. Bennett, along with senior Ally Carda, were each named Top 26 finalists for the award on April 8.
The Top 3 finalists selected from this list of 10 will be announced on May 20, with the winner of the 2015 USA Softball Collegiate Player of the Year Award revealed on May 26 in Oklahoma City.
Bennett enters this week’s play second in the nation with a .520 batting average, 23 multiple-hit games, a .547 on base percentage and 17 stolen bases, also ranking third with a .608 slugging and 48 runs scored.
The junior has hits in 45 of 52 games this season, including 20 of the last 23, and is coming off the first four-hit game of her career last Sunday against Arizona. Owner of a pair of 11-game hitting streaks this season, as well as a nine-game streak, Bennett has produced another great year in Pac-12 play. Hitting .484 in 21 league games in 2015, Bennett is batting .450 (86-for-191) with 22 stolen bases in 66 career conference games.
The sixth-ranked Bruins open up a three-game series at #23 Arizona State on Thursday at 5 p.m. The game will air live on Pac-12 Networks.
