UCLA Wraps Up a Busy First Day of the NCAA Track Championships

EUGENE, Ore. – The UCLA track & field team wrapped up a busy first day at the NCAA Track Championships on Wednesday from Historic Hayward Field.
After the first day four Bruins will earn All-American honors for their efforts at the national meet.
Senior Derek Eager came back to the National Championship to finish 12th overall with a throw of 223-11 in the javelin. The All-American honor will be the second of his career. His career best throw of 233-9 ranks sixth all-time at UCLA.
Senior Alec Faldermeyer wrapped up his standout collegiate career in the hammer throw by finishing in 22nd place with a mark of 204-1. His lifetime best throw of 229-3 ranks second all-time at UCLA.
Junior Nicholas Scarvelis closed his stellar season with a 15th place finish in the shot put. Scarvelis finished with a mark of 62-0.50. His season best of 65-0.50 ranks 10th all-time in a who’s-who in the event in Westwood.
On the track, junior Nick Hartle was unable to advance in the 800m as he clocked a 1:49.73 to place seventh in his heat and 20th overall.
After day one of the heptathlon, senior Tatum Souza sits in 17th with 3,415 points. She opened the competition in the 100m hurdles with a time of 14.20 to score 950 points. She then leaped 5-6.50 in the high jump for 842 points before throwing 38-2 in the shot put for 637 points. Souza closed out the day with 833 points in the 200m with a time of 25.60.
Freshman Steele Wasik currently resides in 13th place in the decathlon after posting a day one score of 3,914 points. Wasik opened the championship with an 11.02 in the 100m (856 points) and then leaped 22-8.50 in the long jump for 795 points. The newcomer came back to throw 41-4.25 in the shot put (643), clear 6-5 in the high jump (767) and finished off the day with a 49.17 (853) in the 400m.
The second day of competition for the Bruins will start at 10 a.m. with Wasik in the decathlon. The final day of the heptathlon for Souza will begin at 12 p.m. Action on the track for UCLA will start at 4 p.m. with the women’s 4x100m relay and the day will conclude with Bronte Golick in the 10k at 6:38 p.m.
