UCLA junior-to-be Bronte Law obliterated the competition to repeat as winner at this week’s English Women’s Amateur Championship in Hunstanton, England, defeating the field with a score of 13-under par, winning by 16 strokes.
“I didn’t just want to come here and win by a bit,” said Law, who became the fourth player to go back-to-back at the England Women’s Am and the first in 20 years. “I really wanted to put a stamp on this, that’s what I came here to do. Coming back and winning this again is big for me. You can win once, but winning again really proved to me that I have come a long way as a player.”
Law, the third-ranked amateur in the world, opened the tournament with a nine-under 63 in the opening round and followed that up with a 69-69-74 finish to post a four-round total of 275.
Back in the United States at the legendary Pinehurst Resort in Pinehurst, N.C., incoming freshman Bethany Wu, the newly-minted No. 1 junior golfer in the world by Golfweek in her closing weeks as a junior golfer, finished runner-up at the 113th Women’s North & South Amateur. The Bruins were looking to have back-to-back champions at the North & South Am after Alison Lee won a year ago, but Wu fell in 20 holes in the final to Georgia’s Bailey Tardy.
Wu made the cut to match play after finishing tied for fourth following three rounds of stroke play. Two more Bruins also participated in the North & South Amateur. Sophomore-to-be Erin Choi also advanced to match play, tying for 15th in stroke play and falling in the round of 16, while another sophomore-to-be Lydia Choi tied for 56th.
