Postgame Notes – UCLA at Stanford
POSTGAME NOTES
UCLA 34, Stanford 16
October 17, 2019
- With the win over Stanford, UCLA improves to 2-2 in the Pac-12 and becomes one of five Pac-12 South schools to enter this weekend’s play with two victories.
- The win at Stanford ended the Cardinal 11-game series win streak (UCLA’s most recent win in the series was in 2008). The victory also marked UCLA’s second road win of the season. The last time it won two or more road games in a season was in 2015. The 2015 season was also the last time UCLA won two or more Pac-12 road games in a season (at Utah, at Oregon State, at Arizona).
- The seven sacks by the UCLA defense is the most by the unit since it also was credited with seven in the January, 2015 Alamo Bowl game which ended the 2014 season versus Kansas State.
- UCLA registered 263 yards rushing against the Cardinal. The last time UCLA recorded at least 200 yards rushing in three straight games was in the 2015 season against UNLV-273, BYU-296, and Arizona-213. The Bruins had rushed for 256 vs. Oregon State and 217 at Arizona in the two previous games this season.
- UCLA held Stanford under 200 yards of total offense for the game (198 – 55 rush, 143 pass). It is the first time the Bruin defense had limited an opponent to less than 200 yards of total offense since a 2009 game against Washington State (181 total yards). The 55 yards rushing by Stanford was the lowest total by a Bruin opponent since it held BYU to 23 yards in a 2016 game in Provo, Utah.
- Kyle Philips (10 catches vs. Stanford) is the first Bruin to make at least 10 receptions in a game since Caleb Wilson caught 11 passes last season at Arizona State. He is the third Bruin this season to register at least 100 yards receiving in a game, joining Demetric Felton (150 at Washington State) and Chase Cota (147 at Washington State).
- The blocked punt by Stanford for a touchdown was the first by a Bruin opponent since USC scored on a blocked punt return in 2018.
- Joshua Kelley had 18 rushes for a season-high 176 yards against Stanford to record his second 100-yard game of the season (had 127 yards at Arizona earlier this season) and the eighth of his career at UCLA. Kelley’s 54-yard scoring run was his longest of 2019 … His career-long run is 61 yards against USC in 2018 and his career-high rushing total is 289 yards against USC last season.
- Devin Asiasi’s 22-yard catch marked his ninth career reception of at least 20 yards and fourth of this season.
- The last time UCLA had a 100-yard rusher (Joshua Kelley – 176 yards) and a 100-yard receiver (Kyle Philips -100) in a game was in 2017 at Stanford (Soso Jamabo -100 yards rushing / Caleb Wilson 145 yards receiving).
- The forced fumble by UCLA (forced by Atonio Mafi and Darnay Holmes, recovery by Stephan Blaylock) in the third quarter against Stanford was the first turnover forced by the Bruins since the Washington State game (no turnovers were forced in the previous two games against Arizona or Oregon State).
- The 21 first half points is the most scored this season by the Bruins and the most scored in the initial half of a game since it also registered 21 points against USC in 2018.
- The 14 points scored against Stanford in the first quarter is the most by the Bruins in a first quarter of a game this season. The 14-3 margin in the first quarter marked the first time this season that UCLA had led by more than 7 points in a game. It was the biggest lead since a 14-3 advantage over USC last season.
- Since the start of the 2018 season, this is the fourth game that UCLA has held the lead (21-10) at the half in a game and the second game this season – loss at Arizona in 2019 (UCLA led 7-6), win at Cal in 2018 (13-0), win at home versus Arizona (17-7).
- UCLA will return home on Saturday, Oct. 26 to host Arizona State on Homecoming in the Rose Bowl at 4:30 p.m.
