Bruins,
Summer of 2021 brought a massive shift in collegiate sports as the NCAA adopted interim legislation providing our student-athletes with the opportunity to financially benefit from their own name, image and likeness ("NIL"). We are excited about the new opportunities available to our student-athletes and share in their enthusiasm. It's a new day, and UCLA will lead in all aspects of NIL.
The new NCAA Policy went into effect on July 1, and our student-athletes are already busy at work, garnering endorsement deals and engaging in NIL activities.
Per the policy, boosters are not permitted to enter into NIL agreements with recruits. However, boosters are permitted to engage in NIL business activities with current student-athletes, so long as the following conditions are met:
- Compensation is tied solely to NIL business activities
- Student-athlete NIL agreements may not be provided without quid pro quo (e.g., compensation for work not performed)
- Compensation may not be provided in exchange for athletic participation or achievement
- Compensation may not be contingent upon a student-athletes enrollment at UCLA
The student-athletes ability to monetize their NIL rights is a historic change to college athletics. UCLA is committed to providing Bruins with a comprehensive program that provides them with the ability to maximize their NIL opportunities. More information will be available on uclabruins.com soon.
Again, should you have questions or suggestions related to NIL, please email NIL@athletics.ucla.edu.
Go Bruins!
