ย
Mick Cronin, The Michael Price Family UCLA Menโs Head Basketball Coach
on Amari Bailey and David Singletonโs performances
โWhen youโve got a guy with Amariโs ability โ heโs got the weight of the world on his shoulders. My job is to try to get him acclimated (and) get his confidence going (and) to put him in situations where he can make plays. Obviously, heโs an elite player going at the rim. But, to me, the star of the game was Dave. No turnovers. Led us in rebounding. Led us in no bad shots.โ
ย
on how critical it was to have Singletonโs performance off the bench
โHuge. When you have a veteran player like Dave, heโs basically your sixth starter. Huge.โ
ย
on Tyger Campbell reaching 1,000 points via 3-pointer
โWell, heโs been working on (the 3-pointer) his whole career. Becoming a good shooter is a process. You have to stick with it. You have to be willing to make the adjustments (and) be coachable. Those that do improve. Those that donโt are insane because they have the same results. โฆ Iโm very happy for him.โ
ย
on David Singletonโs leadership
โAwesome. Itโs been that way since Iโve been here, though. Dave started his sophomore year on that team that won 11 of 14 and almost won the Pac-12 his first year. I have never seen a team insert a guy into the lineup and turn their entire season around when we did that. Heโs just a selfless guy and, obviously, heโs just an elite shooter. โฆ If you would have told me at any point that Dave Singleton was going to lead my team in rebounding with nine, I would have lost that bet. Heโs definitely the star of the game tonight for us. Clearly our leading defensive rebounder. Just a great, great kid. (Heโs) got tremendous character.โ
ย
5th year guard David Singleton
on his hot start from 3-point range this season
โItโs just work over the summer. Just have to trust in my work. Iโm working every day on my footwork and my pace. I just believe in myself. My coaches and teammates believe in me, so my confidence is up. Thatโs a big part of it.โ
ย
on his conditioning
โMy conditioning is going to get better and better. Obviously, Iโm playing more minutes than Iโve ever played. I just have to endure it and maintain focus because I never know. Some games, they might need me to play more minutes than this and I have to stay in focus and top shape.โ
ย
on his career-high nine rebounds
โYeah, I figured out when I subbed out. It makes me feel good. I know that my work in the offseason is really paying off. I understand that nine rebounds is a career high, but that was the gameplan. Iโm just following what the coach told me and thatโs really all it is. The gameplan was defense and rebounding. I was just doing whatever it takes to get the win.โ
ย
Redshirt senior guard Tyger Campbell
on what David Singleton adds to the team
โItโs his fifth year so he knows what to do. He gives us a lot of energy coming off the bench with the second group. Heโs just a great player. Heโs been rebounding a lot better for us this year. Heโs a knock down shooter (and) led the Pac-12 the past two, three years, I think. We just know what heโs capable of. Heโs a great player and can play both sides of the ball. Weโre just encouraging him to keep playing and putting the shots up.โ
ย
on reaching 1,000 career points
โI didnโt know. No one told me. And then I was in the huddle and looked up and saw. I was obviously focused on what coach was saying, but it was a cool moment. I saw I joined like 60 players. That means a lot. Just the hard work that Iโve put in here. I donโt play for those things. Itโs a cool accolade to have.โ
ย
Junior guard Jaylen Clark
on possibly finishing the season as the single-season deflections leader
โThat means a lot. I have to control my aggressiveness sometimes. โฆ Thatโs what I feed off of. Thatโs what the crowd feeds off of. โฆ I just love doing it. I get enjoyment out of playing defense. Thatโs what I take pride in. Iโm pretty sure Iโll (get) the single-season steals record. I already did the math. I gave myself a good start.โ
ย
Long Beach State head coach Dan Monson
opening remarks
โWe got overwhelmed; I felt we could have played with them. We were hanging with them in the first couple of minutes. The pace took us back a bit. It forced us into unforced turnovers that were not typical by us. They got into a rhythm, and we couldnโt really disrupt that.โ
ย
on what they could have done differently
โLike I said, we were just a little bit overwhelmed. We had trouble keeping them off the boards โ we couldnโt disrupt them. Also, defensively, they took us out of the game. Our turnovers gave them the lead, and it was pretty much downhill after that.โ
