Kelly Inouye-Perez, The Shelly Carlin UCLA Head Softball Coach
on the key to rebounding from losing the first game
“I mean, we have a saying that you can only live in one time zone, so the past is as old as dirt you have no control over. Tomorrow, we (have) to be where our feet are. The plan is to come out here and win two ball games and that plan doesn’t change.”

on what she saw from South Carolina’s at-bats
“Patient, short, compact swings. At the end of the day, I think it’s more about (that) they did a great job executing, versus us not being able to do what we do. I think with that, that’s kind of what I saw. Some balls kind of fell and defensively they fell where we weren’t. So, the game is kind of crazy like that, and balls that we hit were positioned in a great place and balls that they hit weren’t. It’s the game, a game we have no control over. So, with that being said, credit to the ability to get hits, it’s a tough sport, but today they fell for them more than they fell for us.”

on how she felt with the outcome and approach of the game
“To answer your question, did I feel good about the outcome of the game? No. Did I feel good about our approach as far as our game plan? Of course. I don’t think it’s on the athletes. If anything, I have to go back and figure out possibly a different approach. So no, I’m not okay with the fact that they were able to do some of the things that they did. But, once again, it’s more credit (to) them. We’ll go back and make some adjustments and figure out what to do tomorrow. But once again, (that’s) the best thing about a two-out-of-three series.”

on the fifth inning where they had tying runs on bases and couldn’t capitalize
“Yeah, I think a big part of our success has not been just based on any one hitter. For everybody that’s watching, Jordan (Woolery) and Megan (Grant) have earned that ability for people to come watch them play in those big moments. And they’ve done amazing jobs and succeeded, and the reason that we’re sitting here today is because of them. They’ve done great things. But, actually, the bigger reason why we’re sitting here in Super Regionals, is because the team has been able to come up with runs in big situations. The ability to have a bottom half – I got Sofia Mujica, who’s a freshman, who came up with two knocks today and an RBI – were able to do things to turn things around. That’s a big part of success when you get to the postseason is not relying on any two. It can be a big momentum, I know for them, to be able to get past that. But for us, we have great faith in the hitters that are behind them. I think that’s what we’re going to need for (the) postseason is (where) we’re not relying on just any one. Our offense has to do a better job of being able to have quality at-bats. I agree, we came out with a plan (and) we didn’t execute it perfectly. We had some great at-bats, we had some hard-hit balls, (but) it didn’t fall our way. Momentum can be a part of the game, or you actually just get to play the game pitch-to-pitch and get to the next one.”

on what South Carolina head coach Ashley Chastain-Woodard has built in one season
“Credit to them, they’re here. So, I think credit to them. I haven’t seen them play a whole lot throughout the year so I couldn’t really speak to their journey. But today they were able to find a way to win.”

UCLA catcher Alexis Ramirez
on what she saw from South Carolina pitchers
“Credit to them, they had good pitches, but I do believe that we were having good (quality) at-bats and getting good swings on pitches we were prepared to hit. So, just staying within ourselves and sticking to our plan, sometimes the ball just doesn’t fall, but I think we had good, quality at-bats.”

on the crowd atmosphere and settling into the game
“I agree with Addi (Fisher’s statement) we just really try to focus on ourselves, play our own game, and stay within ourselves and knowing that we have each other in the dugout is all we need.”

on if early struggles were deflating and how they felt they battled back
“I feel like we really stuck to our play and we continued to fight throughout the whole game. Just because the ball doesn’t fall doesn’t affect us and it doesn’t change our gameplan and our mindset. I think we did a really good job of sticking to our plan, having our approach at the plate, and just continuing to do what is in our control. Wherever to the ball falls and wherever it goes… we can’t control that.”

UCLA pitcher Addisen Fisher
on the crowd atmosphere and settling into the game
“For us, we just try to do us no matter where we play or where we are. We’re always just playing our own game, and the crowd doesn’t matter. The color they’re wearing doesn't matter to us, we just play our game.”

on what felt good for her in the circle and what challenges South Carolina presented
“I mean, they put bat on ball today and did a good job of just hitting good pitches. I’m excited to get another opportunity to play them again. We’re just going to go out and play our game and give it our all.”
