John Savage, the UCLA Baseball Head Coachย
opening statementย
โAgain, I think it was a team effort, a lot of guys being on the same page. Thatโs what weโve been throughout the season. Weโve taken some lumps along the way, but for the most part, theyโve stayed together through thick and thin. To their credit, they believe in one another. We had outstanding pitching this weekend. We had a bunch of naysayers questioning our pitching, and you canโt question that now. At the end of the day, we had a lot of really good at-bats. Our defense was championship-level, clearly. On to the next tournament. I think this team doesnโt feel like this is the end of the journey. It wasnโt our goal to just get to Omaha. Weโve talked a lot about going and playing well, taking our game to whoever we play. Iโm really excited for the guys, excited for the alumni, the fans. Iโm excited for everyone involved. At the end of the day, itโs an appreciation on my behalf towards a lot of people.โย
ย
on what it means to return to Omaha after twelve yearsย
โIt tells you how difficult it is to get there, particularly in the West. They make it very difficult. There are so many great coaches and players in the West, and we beat each other up. This is for the West. Arizona won today, that was big. Oregon Stateโs playing tonight. I think there were 11 teams that got into the tournament, and only three could really advance into the Super Regionals. Everybody has played well, and thatโs a credit to the West. Itโs great to be back. Iโm looking forward to the challenge.โย
ย
on the turnaround from last season to this seasonย
โThe players [made the difference]. The coaches did a great job; my assistants did a great job. Iโve always been very consistent in my approach, win, lose, or draw. Itโs not easy, but we have the right cast of characters in terms of great people on this team. We have people who want to represent UCLA, represent their families. At the end of the day, they came together. We got kicked out of the stadium on day one in the fall. Itโs quite the story; you could write a little bit about this. We had no home, and we came back in January. To our guysโ credit, they came back and played to the maximum of their ability all season long. Last season was a good learning experience; we played a lot of young guys. Obviously, youโre seeing the payoff right now.โย
ย
on Toussaint Bythewoodโs performanceย
"Heโs been really consistent in practice. He should have had more opportunities at the end of the day. He was ready for that opportunity and came up with a big hit. Iโm so happy for Toussaint and his game today.โย
ย
on his mentality going into the World Seriesย
โI think that the Big Ten tournament was a big deal. They experienced the ballpark, being there for a week. They got a little taste of it, and they said that they wanted to come back. Weโve always been a really good postseason team, in all honesty. You look at the record, and you look at the wins; weโve won a lot of games in the postseason. We just havenโt been back to Omaha in the last twelve years. Thatโs challenging and hurtful in a lot of ways, but at the same time, I think I can use my experience. Telling them to enjoy the moment, enjoy the process, enjoy the journey. I think theyโre looking forward to playing in front of big crowds. I thought we played really well in Omaha when we went a couple of weeks ago. The ballpark isnโt going to surprise us in any way; there will just be a lot more people. I know that this team is looking forward to the next team, the next challenge. Thatโs what is so fun about this team; they donโt care who they play, where they play, what time they play. At the end of the day, thatโs how you get on the board here.โย
ย
on the depth of the bullpenย
"A lot of guys are stepping up. They pounded the zone pretty well, I think we only walked two guys in two games. It seemed like we were very competitive. We came back into counts; we won a bunch of 3-2 counts. We had some double plays, thanks to [Landon Stump]. It was a nine-on-one operation, and they just went after people. [Easton] Hawk is really coming into his own as a freshman; heโs taking that closer role to a different level. [August] Souza in the 8th inning, [Jack] OโConnor in the 7th inning, and [Chris] Grothues today. A lot of contributions from a lot of different guys, and thatโs how you move on.โย ย
ย
on the youth of the team and returning important playersย
"We had a really tough year last year. We could have had some guys leave. But they saw the heart of the program, they felt that they could turn the needle. At the end of the day, thatโs what they did, and they did it together. It was really the sophomore class that was the staple in moving it forward. Just because you had a tough year doesnโt mean that you leave. Why not get it right? Thatโs how I look at it. Itโs baseball, itโs a hard game. There is a lot of failure in this game. If youโre running from failure, youโre playing the wrong game. At the end of the day, these guys believed in the program, and I canโt say enough about them. Weโre fighting in a lot of different ways with a lot of different odds, but thereโs no place like UCLA. They know that. Itโs not any greener on the other side. Theyโve realized that, and they knew that we were capable of winning, and thatโs what theyโre doing.โย
ย
Sophomore Shortstop Roch Cholowskyย
on what it means to advance to Omahaย
"This is surreal to me. Itโs something that Iโve dreamed of for as long as I can remember. Getting to go back there and experience that a couple years ago added more fire to the dream. I havenโt really wrapped my head around it, obviously, it just happened. Itโs something Iโm never going to forget. But weโre not done yet. Weโre going there to play our game of baseball and take it to other teams. Iโm looking forward to that.โย ย
on the depth of the batting lineupย
"Itโs not a one-man team. Our lineup showed all year how deep and hard of outs that all nine guys can be. In the last two weekends, thatโs really shown up, because of the buy-in and whatโs at stake. Itโs never going to be just one person; our lineup one through nine has everything you could ask for. Guys go up there and put up quality at-bats. It also helps when you have guys like Stump in your bullpen who are going to go up there and compete. It makes our lives easier. I donโt have to produce for us to be a great baseball team; weโve got amazing guys throughout the lineup. If Iโm not having a day, those guys are going to pick me up.ย
ย
on having experience playing in Omaha this seasonย
"I think itโs huge for us. Thereโs really no other team that has gotten that experience this year. Weโre the last team in the Big Ten standing, so weโre the only team that has gotten to play there. Weโve played there in front of a big crowd too, which is useful. Using that next week is going to help us; same ballpark, same everything. We just have to get back out there and do what weโve been doing already.โย ย
ย
Sophomore Pitcher Landon Stumpย
on adjusting to the physical toll of pitching in collegeย
"I feel a lot better physically. Last year, at the end of the year, I wasnโt really strong physically. I poured a lot into my body this year. I feel good right now. I went for 72 pitches, but I definitely could have gone for more. Iโve got more in the tank moving on. I feel really good physically, and Iโm excited to keep moving.โย ย
ย
on the depth in the bullpenย
"I felt really good about the bullpen. It sucks getting pulled but Iโm never mad about it because I know how good our bullpen is. Iโm happy to see the next guy pick me up and the next guy pick him up. We just keep passing it, and today we threw a bunch of zeroes, so it was a good day.โย
