Matt Transue begins his first season as chief of staff for the UCLA football program in 2026. Transue arrived in Westwood after serving the last four seasons at James Madison as assistant athletic director of football administration (2024-25) and senior director of football operations (2022-23).
Transue played a pivotal role in helping the Dukes’ football program reclassify from the Football Championship Subdivision (FCS) to Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS) as a member of the Sun Belt Conference as the leader of operations. In his administrator role, he served as the sport supervisor for the football program and the liaison for head coach Bob Chesney and the athletics director.
Entering 2026, Transue has 11 years of full-time NCAA Division I experience having served as director of football operations at Georgia Southern (2021) and five seasons in various roles at Virginia Tech (2016-20).
Prior to James Madison, Transue worked as director of football operations at Georgia Southern in 2021. In that role, he oversaw the daily administrative and operational duties within the Eagles’ football program in addition to handling team travel and other responsibilities to ensure smooth and efficient operations.
Before Georgia Southern, Transue spent five years in Blacksburg, Va. with the Virginia Tech football program. He was assistant director of football operations from 2017-21, which included a stint in 2019 as interim director. Transue began his time at Virginia Tech as assistant director of player personnel and recruiting from 2016-17. He was responsible for assisting the day-to-day operations of the Hokies’ football operation and recruiting departments and served as director of pro scouting, coordinating NFL personnel visits and VT’s annual Pro Day. Transue also assisted with graphic design for the program’s social media channels.
Transue was also a recruiting volunteer at Memphis during the 2015 football season and worked as an account executive for the Memphis Redbirds, the Triple-A affiliate of the St. Louis Cardinals.
A native of Brentwood, Calif. in Contra Costa County, Transue graduated from the University of Tennessee with a bachelor’s in sports management in 2013 and a master’s in sports management in 2014. He served as a student assistant and later graduate assistant in football recruiting and operations from 2010-15.
Transue and his wife Amy were married in July 2019. The couple has a son, Noah, who was born in July 2021, and a daughter, Grace, who was born in April 2024.
