Phil Marfuggi is in his fifth season coaching at UCLA and first as full-time assistant coach. Marfuggi previously served as the team's volunteer assistant coach, coaching the goalkeepers and assisting with strength and conditioning.

In this third season with the Bruins in 2016, Marfuggi aided the Bruins to the NCAA Tournament for the 34th consecutive year. UCLA ranked third in the Pac-12 with five shutouts including Kevin Silva recorded back-to-back clean sheets in his collegiate debut. Silva also ranked 12th in the NCAA and tops in the Pac-12 in saves per game at 5.00.

In his first season with the Bruins in 2014, Marfuggi helped lead UCLA to a 14-5-5 overall record and a College Cup Championship game appearance. His work with the goalkeepers was paramount in the team tallying a Pac-12-high eight shutouts. Under Marfuggi's tutelage, goalkeeper Earl Edwards Jr. posted a career-best 0.89 goals against average, and he was selected in the third round of the MLS SuperDraft by Orlando City SC.

Following a decorated collegiate career at Clemson University, Marfuggi was drafted in the first round (12th overall selection) of the 2007 MLS Supplemental Draft by the New England Revolution. The New Jersey native played two seasons professionally for the Revolution, Miami FC and the Pittsburgh Riverhounds.

At Clemson, Marfuggi started all four years (2004-07), earning All-American, All-South Region, and All-ACC Honors in 2005 and 2006. He was goalkeeper for the Tigers squad that allowed zero goals en route to the 2005 Final Four in North Carolina and was also a 2006 Hermann Trophy candidate.

Prior to his collegiate career, Marfuggi earned the starting goalkeeper position for the U-17 National Team that took fifth in the World Cup in 2003. He attended the U.S Soccer Residency Program at IMG Academy in Bradenton, Florida for two years, where he earned honors as a McDonalds All-American and Parade All-American. In 2003, Marfuggi was ranked the 11th best recruit in the country.

In addition to soccer, Marfuggi also played football professionally for four seasons in the Arena Football League.
