Thomas Arguello was elevated to the position of chief operating officer and chief of staff for the UCLA football program under head coach DeShaun Foster in January 2025. The promotion represented the latest for Arguello, who came to UCLA in 2022 as director of football equipment operations.

Arguello became chief of staff soon after Foster’s hiring as head coach in February 2024. In this role, Arguello works alongside the head coach on a daily basis and oversees the program’s activities and operations, as well as the budget. He is also a liaison with UCLA’s athletic department and the Big Ten Conference and assists in student-athlete development.

“I have been impressed by Thomas since he joined our program as equipment director,” said Foster. “Regardless of his role, he has tackled everything with the same enthusiasm and forward thinking. There is no one I trust more to stand beside me as UCLA football takes its next steps.”

Just after Arguello’s hiring by head coach Chip Kelly to lead the football equipment staff in May 2022, UCLA embarked on its move to the Big Ten Conference. As a contact with all road locations, Arguello’s planning for future travel increased by 14 sites. He maintained his responsibility as director of hourly staff and 17 team managers to ensure organization during practices and games and in tracking inventory on a day-to-day basis. Arguello also served as the program’s point of contact with Jordan Brand representatives in the early years of the partnership.

A veteran of the UC system, Arguello moved to Westwood after five years as an associate director of equipment at UC Davis. With the Aggies, he worked alongside the football, field hockey, lacrosse, men’s water polo, women’s water polo and swimming and diving programs. Among his duties with those teams were managing all adidas apparel ordering and equipment and coordinating with each coach regarding practices, games and off-field events.

From 2013-2017, Arguello was an assistant equipment manager for the NFL’s Oakland Raiders. In addition to ordering, maintaining, fitting, storing and tracking inventory of shoulder pads and helmets, he was the contact for in-game issues related to coach-to-player radio systems. Arguello also supervised game-day staff members and interns and managed all aspects of coordinating, packing, loading and unloading of equipment trucks.

Arguello started at quarterback for the University of La Verne in 2010 and 2011, throwing for 3,150 yards and 19 touchdowns. His playing career continued into the professional ranks in 2012, joining the American Football International league’s Dauphins de Nice in Nice, France for one season.

Arguello earned his master’s degree in sport management from the University of San Francisco in 2014. He graduated from La Verne in 2012 with his bachelor’s degree in criminology. Arguello and his wife, Courtney, were married in July 2015.
