LOS ANGELES - UCLA's Gerrit Cole was selected first overall by the Pittsburgh Pirates and teammate Trevor Bauer was chosen third by the Arizona Diamondbacks in the first round of the 2011 MLB First-Year Player Draft on Monday.
Cole becomes the first player in school history to be chosen first overall in the MLB First-Year Player Draft (June draft). Prior to Cole, right-handed pitcher Tim Leary had been UCLA's highest overall selection in the June draft, getting chosen second overall by the New York Mets in 1979. First baseman Chris Chambliss was chosen first overall in the 1970 free agent draft (January draft).
This marks the first time since 1978 in which one college baseball program has had two of the top three overall draft selections (Arizona State). That year, the Atlanta Braves selected third baseman Bob Horner first overall and the New York Mets drafted outfielder Hubie Brooks third.
UCLA's previous top-10 selections have included right-handed pitcher Josh Karp (2001, sixth to the Montreal Expos), infielder Troy Glaus (1997, third to the Anaheim Angels), Pete Janicki (1992, eighth to the California Angels) and Leary (1979, second to the New York Mets).
Cole went 6-8 with a 3.31 ERA in 16 starts for UCLA this season. The native of Santa Ana, Calif., totaled 119 strikeouts and just 24 walks (two intentional) in 114.1 innings. He has compiled 376 career strikeouts, the second-highest total on UCLA's all-time list.
Selected in the first round of the 2008 MLB Draft by the New York Yankees (28th overall), Cole earned All-Pac-10 Conference honors in 2009 and 2010 and secured honorable mention acclaim in 2011. He pitched for the USA Collegiate National Team in the summer in 2009 and 2010.
Bauer went 13-2 with a 1.25 ERA, recording a nation-leading 203 strikeouts for the Bruins this spring. He issued just 36 walks in a team-high 136.2 innings, limiting the opposition to a Pac-10-best .154 batting average. Bauer's 203 strikeouts in 2011 established a new Pac-10 single-season record, eclipsing Mark Prior's 202 strikeouts at USC during the 2001 season.
Earlier on Monday, Bauer was selected as one of three finalists for the Golden Spikes Award, presented annually to the top amateur baseball player. Bauer is joined by Virginia's Danny Hultzen and Texas' Taylor Jungmann as the award's three finalists. He has already secured National Player of the Year honors from Collegiate Baseball and Pac-10 Conference Pitcher of the Year acclaim after having been named a three-time All-Pac-10 Team selection.
In addition, Bauer established himself as UCLA's career leader in strikeouts (460), wins (34) and innings pitched (373.1). Bauer's single-season strikeout totals of 203 in 2011 and 165 in 2010 rank first and second in school history. He finished his junior year with 10 complete games, including a string of nine consecutive complete games to close the season.
Vanderbilt was the last college program to have two players selected within the first top 10 selections. Left-hander David Price went first overall to Tampa Bay that season with right-hander Casey Weathers being drafted eighth by Colorado.
