UCSB Head Coach Tim Vom Steeg:
"Obviously this is a very disappointing loss, but I thought we played well today. Indiana is a good team, but I thought after that goal we had a good shot. [UCSB] is resilient, we work hard and are committed, and I thought we could wear them down. In the second half, we had good opportunities, and in overtime we kept coming. I told the players that at the end of the day, as a coach you put something together, and you want them to do so well. Not in my wildest dreams did I think we would play that well against such a good team. I just wish we had another overtime period."
On who was the better team:
"Well, they're holding the trophy. We were so focused, so committed, and we've changed so much since the last time we faced them while they've stayed the same. I knew going into today that Indiana was going to see a much different team."
"This program is growing. Obviously we now have the championship experience, and how great were our fans today? The community and the school want this to keep going, and there's no reason why we can't be a top ten school for years to come."
On the decision to use goalkeeper Kyle Reynish instead of Danny Kennedy for penalty kicks:
"Danny was very diplomatic [in his post-game quotes]. He's still mad at me. Penalty kicks are about length, and Kyle is 6'4" with long arms. Nobody works harder with penalty kicks than us, it just didn't work out today. With Kyle he doesn't have to guess on which way the guy is going to kick, and that's why he was able to block those shots."
"Someone tell me we lost. I still felt we were in good shape the whole game. They came out and sat in the second half and you can't do that against us. Right after we scored, we had more opportunities. [Earlier in the year] we've been able to get the last goal."
On the penalty kick rule:
I'm fine with the format. You get 110 minutes, and you've got to put some balls away. If you don't do it in 110 minutes, you need to find another way."
UCSB goalkeeper Danny Kennedy:
On whether he knew that he would not be the goalkeeper for penalty kicks:
"I knew. Kyle [Reynish] is a great shot stopper. He's long, and he's got a couple inches on me. He made some great saves. We were just unfortunate that we didn't get enough. Any time you're in a championship game, you just don't want to go to penalty kicks."
On the future of UCSB soccer and how the team fared against Indiana:
"You could see it out on the field. I'd like to see the stats on how many corners we had compared to them. It's unfortunate it went to penalty kicks and it just didn't go our way. Every school needs one team to lead the way in terms of championships. For UCSB it was us. We know that what talks in championships and trophies. UCSB will be back here."
On Indiana's first goal:
"It was my mistake. I got out of position and misjudged the speed of the ball. I got a finger on it, but he got a foot on it. It was my fault."
UCSB midfielder Nate Boyden:
On his missed penalty kick:
"It was a bad PK. It was very savable, it was an easy save. That's the way I kick them all the time at practice, it just wasn't my day."
"A year ago I didn't even know if I would ever play again. I never thought I would be here. I thought we were going to win today, but we've got to move on and move forward. Tomorrow is another day."
On Indiana's second half play: "When they got the lead they dropped off. I thought it was easier than against most teams, so we definitely got our chances."
UCSB midfielder Tyler Rosenlund:
On physical nature of game:
"It was very physical but it was nothing personal. Both teams have such a strong will to win. Maybe we used their quotes from the last time we played to fire us up. Last time they thought they were the better team. Today we feel we were."
