Rhonda Watkins highlighted the women's track and field team on Saturday at the UCLA Invitational as the senior posted the No. 3 long jump mark in the NCAA this season to win. The two-time NCAA champion in the long jump had a winning mark of 20-7.25, nearly two and a half feet better then the second-place finisher.
Watkins was just one of eight Bruin wins during the meet. Senior Chanelle Curry won the 400m hurdles with a season-best time of 1:01.36. The 4x100m relay team of Watkins, freshman Yasmin Woodruff and seniors Nicole Leach and Krystin Lacy ran a season-best and improved regional qualifier of 45.23 to win. The 4x400m relay also posted a win as the team of freshmen Camilla Dencer, Ryann Krais and LeNette Battle and Lacy ran 3:41.70.
Junior Katy Viuf won the pole vault for the second consecutive meet as her winning mark of 13-1.75 was nearly one foot better then the second-place finisher. Freshman Brittany Borman won the shot put with a season-best toss of 46-4.25, and senior Hillary Werth won the javelin with a throw of 130-8.
On Friday night, senior Ciara Viehweg won the steeplechase with a lifetime-best and school record time of 10:27.73.
The Bruins will next host the Rafer Johnson/Jackie Joyner Kersee Invitational April 9-11 for the final home meet of the season.
