Al Sparlis, who has devoted much time to the service of his university, community and country, lettered in football in 1941 and 1942 (he played on the Bruins' first Rose Bowl team) before spending more than two years in the U.S. Air Force during World War II. After his military stint, Sparlis returned to UCLA and became an All-America guard in 1945, earning team MVP honors.

Sparlis had a brief career as a guard and linebacker for the NFL's Green Bay Packers in 1946, but went to fight in the Korean War and flew 65 missions. He later became associate vice president of Coldwell Banker of Beverly Hills, and also fought in the Vietnam War as a reservist. Sparlis was inducted into both the National Football Foundation Hall of Fame and the College Football Hall of Fame in 1983. He is the most decorated member in the Hall of Fame, having earned the Distinguished Flying Cross, 11 campaign medals, and many oak leaf clusters.

Sparlis was a charter member of the UCLA Athletic Hall of Fame in 1984.
