- Induction:
- 1984
Bill Spaulding is the father of big-time football at UCLA. After coaching at Western Michigan University (1907-1921) and the University of Minnesota (1922-1924), Bill Spaulding took a football program that had never had a winning season and turned it around in his first year as head coach, going 5-3-1 in 1925. In his 14 seasons, he compiled a record of 72-51-8 and took the Bruins to athletic maturity and national prominence. After retiring as football coach, Spaulding took over as athletic director and golf coach in 1939 until retiring in 1947.
Known as "Westwood Will" and also "Bunker Bill," Spaulding, who died at 86 in 1966, was a charter member of the UCLA Athletic Hall of Fame in 1984.
