Charles Cheshire
- Induction:
- 2001
Cheshire starred at halfback for three seasons (1933-34-35) for the UCLA football team under Coach William Spaulding. Over that period, the Bruins had a record of 21-9-1. Cheshire was twice named All-Coast (’34, 35) and he received All-American recognition for his senior season when he led the Bruins to a share of their first PCC title. Cheshire still holds the Bruin all-time record for the longest run from scrimmage with a 93-yard scamper in 1934 against Montana. Cheshire had a three-year career average of 5.08 yards per carry and accumulated 1,657 total yards during his Bruin career. After his senior season, Cheshire played in the 1936 East-West Shrine game and then he became the first Bruin ever picked in the NFL draft by being selected in the second round by the Detroit Lions. Cheshire, a great all-around athlete, also lettered for the Bruin baseball and track and field teams.
