Karen Moe-Thornton

Karen Moe-Thornton was a world record holder and Olympic gold medalist even before she began swimming for UCLA in 1974. Moe-Thornton established the record in the 200-meter butterfly four times between 1970-72, the last at the 1972 Olympics in Munich. The following spring, she spent 22 days in the People's Republic of China on a goodwill tour sponsored by the State Department as part of an exchange program, "Friendship Through Sports."
Moe-Thornton, who also was the captain of the 1976 Olympic swim team and went on to become the women's swim coach at California, was inducted into the UCLA Athletic Hall of Fame in 1989.
