Though he was a dynamic All-America halfback in 1962, Alexander was also one of the Bruins' top defensive players, and it was at defensive back and kick returner in which he excelled in the NFL. The San Francisco 49ers drafted Alexander in the second round in 1963, and he intercepted five passes as a rookie. Two years later, he led the NFL in kickoff returns. Alexander went on to play 11 years for three NFL teams and finished his career with 43 interceptions.
