Mike Marienthal

A three-sport letterman who played on the Bruins' first Rose Bowl team. A Marine Corps lieutenant in World War II who was awarded the Purple Heart for severe combat injuries, including losing a leg, caused by enemy mortar shelling during action in the Pacific, he returned to UCLA as a football assistant coach and scout following his military service. He received his bachelor's degree in 1947, and got his Masters in Education in 1951. In public education, he served 35 years as a football coach, teacher and principal at Nimitz, Webster, and Audubon Junior High Schools, and Narbonne and Jefferson High Schools. He was a radio football spotter and worked for the Bruin Hoopsters, Bruin Bench, Bruin Athletic Club and the UCLA Athletic Hall of Fame. In 1988, he was the recipient of UCLA's University Service Award. He recently retired as offical scorer after 50 years (1946-1996) on the job.
