LOS ANGELES - Behind Florida men's sprinters Gerald Clervil, John Capel and Bobby Williams, the No. 4 Gators beat the No. 23 UCLA men Saturday at Drake Stadium 101-99, snapping the Bruins' 51-straight home dual winning streak. The UCLA men's last home dual loss was to Texas 83-71 on March 16, 1991.
UCLA's women, ranked No. 2 in the nation, beat the No. 10 Gators 110-81. It was the Bruin women's 58th consecutive dual win, including 47 straight at Drake Stadium.
In the men's competition, Florida won the 100m (Capel, 10.18, second-fastest time in Florida history; top mark, 10.03, Dennis Mitchell, 1988); 200m (Williams, 20.62), 400m (Clervil, 46.62) and the 4 X100m relay (Clervil, Capel, Williams, Daymon Carroll). On the track, the Gators also added wins in the 110m hurdles (John Buscema, 14.11), 400m hurdles (Erin Tucker, 51.43; beating a lunging at the finish line UCLA's John Hall, 51.44) and two-mile (Rob Evans, 9:02.78).
Hurting the Bruin men's chances to win was a false start in the 4 X 100m relay. In international dual scoring in the relays, the winning team gets five points and the second-place team three. Because of the false start, the Bruins did not get any points in the 4 X 100m relay and lost the meet by two points.
In the field, the Bruin men were led by senior Luke Sullivan and freshman Scott Moser. Sullivan won two events (hammer, 206-3; discus, 190-3) and Moser won the shot put (60-11 1/4, personal best), was second in the discus (184-9) and third in the hammer (180-0).
UCLA's men entered the meet not at full strength because of injuries. Not competing for the Bruins were-- senior All-American Brian Fell, two-time Pac-10 400m hurdle champion, with a respiratory ailment; senior All-American shot putter Wade Tift, flu and junior All-American sprinter Damian Allen, hamstring strain.
Bruin men's head coach Bob Larsen, in his 15th season, suffered only his third dual defeat as UCLA's head coach. He is now 115-3-1 overall.
In women's competition, UCLA was led by seniors, Andrea Anderson and Seilala Sua, sophomore Michelle Perry and freshman Keyon Soley.
In the field, Sua won two events, the shot put (55-3 1/2) and discus (198- 11) and was second in the hammer (181-6). Freshman Tracy O'Hara also set an American junior record in the pole vault, winning with a mark of 13-4 1/4, breaking her old record of 13-3 set last year.
On the track, Anderson won the 100m (11.67), Soley, who also added a win in the long jump (19-11), won the 200m (24.36, season-best) and Perry won the 100m hurdles (13.60, season-best). They also teamed with sophomore Shakedia Jones to give the Bruins a victory in the 4 X 100m relay (44.56, season-best).
Bruin women's head coach Jeanette Bolden, in her sixth season, improves her Bruin and career dual meet record to 50-0.
The Bruins conclude their 1999 home season next Saturday (April 10), hosting Baylor and CS Northridge at Drake Stadium, starting at 1 p.m.
