THIS WEEK - Defending NCAA Champions UCLA (11-2, ranked No. 5) will look for its second consecutive Shanico Inn-vitational win Friday, Mar. 6 at Corvallis, OR. The Bruins will take on 16th-ranked Oregon State (8-2), George Washington and Seattle-Pacific at OSU's Gill Coliseum at 7 pm.

BRUINS LOOK FOR SECOND WIN OVER OSU THIS SEASON - UCLA will attempt to repeat the outcome of last month's meeting with Oregon State at the Bruin Classic, which the Bruins won. UCLA has won four consecutive regular season meets against the Beavers and currently holds a 17-10 overall advantage.

LAST YEAR'S SHANICO INN-VITATIONAL - UCLA achieved its fifth-highest score in school history at last year's Shanico Inn-vitational with a winning total of 196.5. Stella Umeh won the all-around with a score of 39.325, followed closely by Kiralee Hayashi with a 39.3. The Bruins set a then-school record on bars (49.475). Lisa Hiley set up the team for the record with a career-high 9.875 in the leadoff position.

A LOOK AT THE FIELD - Host team Oregon State will provide UCLA its biggest challenge in the field. Head coach and former Bruin gymnastics great Tanya (Service) Chaplin heads up a team that two weeks ago at the Bruin Classic, scored 192.55 to place second ahead of 7th-ranked Penn State. Megan Murphy, one of OSU's four All-Americans, won the all-around last week for the fifth time in seven meets. George Washington is ranked ninth in the Southeast region, while Seattle-Pacific, the 1997 USAGC National Champions, is ranked eighth in the West region.

BRUINS SCORE 194.425 IN LOSS TO WASHINGTON - In an attempt to rest a few gymnasts, UCLA took a loss at Washington last Friday, 195.9-194.425. The Bruins fielded a five-athlete lineup on vault and floor, making all scores count on those two events. UCLA opted to rest all-arounders Stella Umeh (limited to one event) and Kiralee Hayashi (three events), while Washington competed its top line-up and scored a season-high team total.

DEGTEVA WINS SECOND CONSECUTIVE ALL-AROUND - After a shaky opening to the season, sophomore Lena Degteva has been red-hot, winning her second consecutive all-around title last weekend with a season-high 39.325. Degteva has been outstanding in her last three meets, averaging 39.217 in the all-around while placing second once and first twice in a row. In her first three all-around performances this season, she averaged 37.858.

HAYASHI HAS CAREER MEET - Junior Kiralee Hayashi set or tied career-highs on two events and tied a season-high on her third vs. Washington. On vault, Hayashi hit a new career-high with a 9.9 to place third. She also placed second on bars (season-high 9.85) and beam (career-high 9.9).
