WESTWOOD, Calif. - Three-time defending national champion UCLA defeated No. 7 University of Massachusetts today, earning a 6-2 victory.
After a scoreless first quarter, the Bruins bounced back, notching two goals each in the remaining three quarters. The Minutewomen, held scoreless in the second and fourth quarters, notched their last goal of the game with 1:33 left in the third quarter. Six Bruins notched one goal apiece to put 6 points on the scoreboard. Freshman Jenny Lamb (Huntington Beach) notched a goal and also recorded two steals. The Bruins' defense was guided by junior netkeeper Erin Golaboski (Severna Park, MD), who tallied eight saves today.
The Minutewomen put two points on the scoreboard, the first from junior Claudia Clement (Piti, Guam) and the second from junior Katie Grogan (Costa Mesa). Goalkeeper Dana Sinkwich (Ontario) tallied five saves.
Today's matchup was the third between UMass and UCLA in intercollegiate women's water polo, and the third victory for the Bruins. Today's win increases the Bruins' record to 9-6 overall, and it remains at 2-2 in MPSF conference play. The Bruins have outscored their 1999 opponents 110-72. The Minutewomen fall to 9-3.
UCLA will travel to Northern California this weekend to play in two MPSF conference matches. The Bruins meet No. 3 California on Saturday, March 20 for a noon game. On Sunday, the Bruins head to Stockton to play No. 20 University of the Pacific at 11 am.
