LOS ANGELES - The UCLA men's water polo team (2-0 overall) defeated Pepperdine 7-3 in its opening match of the Southern California Water Polo Tournament Saturday at USC's McDonald's Swim Stadium. The Bruins will face Navy later this evening at 5:50 p.m. to round out Group C competition.
Senior Matt Armato paced UCLA with three goals while junior Dave Parker added a pair. Parker and Armato put the Bruins on the board late in the first quarter and UCLA never looked back, dominating the Waves at both ends of the pool.
Juniors Sean Kern and Adam Wright also scored goals for the Bruins. Pepperdine cut the Bruin lead to 3-2 in the second quarter with goals by Greg Lonzo and Sean Hylton, and threatened once again in the third quarter on Lonzo's second goal to make the score 4-3. But the Bruins held on to take the victory.
Game times for Sunday's matches will be determined following the conclusion of play today. The SoCal Tournament championship match will take place Sunday at 4:45 p.m., with the third place match to follow at 5:50 p.m.
