Sept. 18, 1999
KENT, Ohio - UCLA defeated the host Kent Golden Flashes, 15-5, 15-2, 15-2, to complete a 2-0 weekend and improve the team's record to 8-1 on the 1999 season. One of UCLA's three scheduled matches on the weekend was cancelled after Hurricane Floyd grounded Seton Hall in South Orange, N.J. The Bruins were the only team in the tournament to remain undefeated after defeating both Cincinnati and Kent. For the second time in as many weeks, sophomore Kristee Porter was named Tournament MVP.
Senior middle blocker Tamika Johnson led the Bruins with 10 kills on the evening, adding two block assists. Freshman Lauren Fendrick came off of the bench to record four of UCLA's nine service aces, while Elisabeth Bachman was the team's blocking leader with four assisted blocks. Fendrick had just six swings in the match, but all six were kills, giving her a 1.000 hitting percentage.
UCLA doubled up Kent's blocking total, recording eight to KSU's four. As a team, the Bruins hit .478 on the evening, while the Golden Flashes hit just .075.
With the conclusion of the Kent Invitational, UCLA has completed its pre-conference season schedule. The Bruins have won two of the three tournaments they participated in, taking titles at the Pioneer Classic and Kent Invitational, and finishing runner-up to host Hawaii at the Hawaiian Airlines Wahine Volleyball Classic over Labor Day weekend.
UCLA next takes to the floor on Friday, Sept. 24, with a 7:30 p.m. start against Arizona at Pauley Pavilion. The match will be televised as part of the Pac-10 package on Fox Sports Net, and a radio broadcast will be available on broadcast.com.
