LOS ANGELES - The UCLA men's water polo team (4-1 overall, 0-0 Mountain Pacific Sports Federation) took third place in the Southern California Water Polo Tournament, as the Bruins defeated UC Irvine 12-8 in the third place game following a 9-7 semi-final loss to eventual champion Stanford at USC's McDonald's Swim Stadium on Sunday.

Two Bruins, senior Matt Armato and junior Dave Parker, were named to the SoCal All-Tournament team. Armato, a first team honoree, scored 10 goals in four games including two hat tricks Saturday against first round opponents Pepperdine and Navy and a two-pointer versus Stanford in the semifinal match. A second team selection, Parker scored six goals including a hat trick versus Navy as well.

After defeating Pepperdine 7-3 and Navy 14-6 in the first round of competition Saturday, UCLA scored four second quarter goals to secure a 4-4 halftime score with Stanford in a semi-final match Sunday. But the Cardinal's Sean Joy scored a two-point goal with 4:12 left in the third quarter to give Stanford a 7-5 lead which it never relinquished. Armato and junior Brian Brown each added two-point goals, while junior Andrew Bailey also scored.

UCLA bounced back to drop UC Irvine in the third place match with three goals by Bailey, two goals by Armato and junior Adam Wright, and a two-point goal by junior Sean Kern. Parker and freshman Matt Flesher also scored against the Anteaters.

Stanford defeated host USC 11-10 in overtime of the championship match. The Bruins will meet Stanford again this weekend, as UCLA travels to Northern California to face the Cardinal Saturday, Sept. 25, at noon and California Sunday, Sept. 26, also at noon.
