MINNEAPOLIS - UCLA women placed sixth and the Bruin men were 12th on Saturday (Sept. 25th) at the Roy Griak Cross Country Invitational, hosted by the University of Minnesota at Minneapolis. In one of the most prestigious collegiate cross country meets in the U. S., the Griak Invite includes over 210 teams (NCAA Div. I, II, III, NAIA and high school) with over 2,000 runners competing in six races. The races were held on the Lee Bolstad Golf Course, located on the Minnesota campus.

In the women's Div. I race, the Bruins, rated No. 20 in the nation, placed sixth, with 206 points. The winning team (out of 25) was No. 16 Arizona State, with 53 points, followed by No. 1 Brigham Young (second-place, 73), No. 23 Minnesota (third-place, 165), No. 18 Missouri (fourth-place, 178), unranked Nebraska (fifth-place, 190) and No. 20 UCLA in sixth.

Individually, the Bruin women were led by junior Kelly Cohn, who placed seventh over the 5000m course with a time of 17:53. UCLA also had two other runners finish in the Top 30, sophomore Elaine Canchola (26th, 18:22) and junior Katie Nuanes (28th, 18:23). Other UCLA finishers included-senior Melinda George (70th, 18:59), sophomore Alynda Franco (75th, 19:03), junior Gina Donnelly (114th, 19:42) and freshman Stefani Clark (5th, 19:51).

The women's individual winner was Duke freshman Sheela Agrawal, with a winning time of 17:31.

In the men's Div. 1 race, UCLA placed 12th, with 331 points. The winning men's team was No. 5 Wisconsin, with 86 points. The Top Five men's teams (out of 28) were--No. 5 Wisconsin (first-place, 86), No. 27 Brigham Young (second-place, 133), No. 6 Northern Arizona (third-place, 143), No. 9 Oregon (fourth-place, 172) and No. 19 Weber State (fifth-place, 197).

The Bruin men over the 8000m course were led by two runners in the Top 40--sophomore Bryan Green placed 35th (25:21) and senior Will Bernaldo was 37th (25:23). Other UCLA finishers included--senior Dan Brecht (68th, 25:48), junior Mason Moore (80th, 25:55), senior Matt Pitts (111th, 26:16), junior Scott Abbott (132nd, 26:32) and freshman Justin Patananan (146th, 26:44).

The men's individual winner was Oregon senior Steve Fein, in a time of 24:13.

Next Saturday (Oct. 2), the Bruins will compete at the Stanford Invitational.
